Player movements and rumours

  1. Paddy P Orr

NRL probably won't let the contract happen anyway.

  2. Cribbage RG Cribb

He tried other clubs. No-one else is interested.

  3. Harry Sack SB Slippy

We apparently offered him a deal but he didn't like the Terms.

  4. Magic AJ Parker

I don't know what value there is in a 32yr old Todd Carney anyway.

I guess anythings better than Ray Thompson

  5. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

He could make a few sides. Tigers, Dogs, Titans, Broncos and Souths off the top of my head.

  6. Cribbage RG Cribb

    Doesn't mean they want him.

  7. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

That's very true. I was more just thinking of the clubs that could use him.

  8. Magic AJ Parker

Shannon Boyd signs with the Tits.

I guess that means Jarrod Wallace is on the move..

  9. Alec AD Funkotron

    Wallace re-signed already.

  10. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Wallace and Boyd both on 4 year deals.

    8. Boyd
    10. Wallace
    13. Arrow

Guess they're moving James to an edge.

  11. Wilson SB Wilson

James has played on the edge a bit this year already.

  12. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Didn't they move him back to prop after one game?

  13. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah, but pretty much just because they had no props. They've been keen to move him to an edge for a couple of years now, even through different coaches, but their squad basically just won't let them.

I'm sceptical of the whole thing really but with them signing Boyd he'll definitely get a fair shot at it now.

  14. Wilson SB Wilson

Yeah they've even shifted him in some games this year as well. I don't think he's particularly suited to it but that's the Titans for you.

    Cribbage likes this.
  15. Tartmaster AJ James

I’d definitely prefer James up the guts rather than on the edge.
But still fairly happy with Boyd coming

Pretty strong rumours coming out internally that Woods is a done deal at the Roosters for a mid-season switch.

Apparently Cronulla couldn't agree to a high enough % of his pay packet to negotiate a release with the Dogs.

Not sure how I feel about that if it turns out to be true.

  17. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

How do the Roosters have the money for it? Dogs would need you to pay at least 4-500k a year.

  18. Lukic L Popovic

Yeah, if true it's pretty ridiculous.

It's why we need a public salary cap. It's an absolute must. That or limiting the TPAs available because if one team can organise an infinite amount of TPAs while others struggle, it's not really much of a salary cap.

Like I know the stories they had with Ferguson that's fair enough why he's on a below market deal, or say SKD in the past, but even guys like Tupou, Manu & Mitchell being on long-term deals which are below market doesn't make sense. Tupou played origin, whether deservedly or not, so he wouldn't be that cheap. Mitchell's had huge wraps on him for years. Moses Suli had 2 teams offer him & pay 450k as an 18/19 year old and he's showed not half of what Mitchell had at the time, so you can't tell me Mitchell isn't on 500k plus. Could say the same for Manu as Suli tbh.

There's only 2 logical conclusions if we're going to assume they aren't outright rorting the cap:

    1. The TPA system isn't audited at all and the Roosters are just paying players through TPA agreements. E.g. We've got a 200k contract with Herbalife to provide products to the team facility. Herbalife then sign Ryan Matterson as a sponsor for 150k a year. I'm sure there's something in the salary cap in the NRL's articles that prevent non-arms length dealings for sure, but how do you prevent this from happening? I'm not sure the NRL would have the right to see Matterson & Herbalife's contract in this example so I think it's fair game from the Roosters POV.

    2. The Roosters are paying off player agents. Are player agent fees included in the cap? If they aren't, what's to stop the Roosters from offering Isaac Liu 200k a year and his agent 100k as a signing bonus, while the Tigers offer him 250k a year but his agent only 50k. The agent can turnaround and say ah, look the Roosters offered you a better deal so sign with them. I'm convinced a lot of players aren't actually involved in their negotiations so I'm not sure what the scope is for stuff like this actually happening. Most player agents are scumbags as well so I'd say this is a pretty strong possibility too.

it could be a property scam. remember the scott prince drama? that only came out because the titans and the building company had a disagreement.

Tedesco, high iq property developer, just sold his land within 12 days and doubled his money in five years: https://www.realestate.com.au/news/...ot-in-spring-farm/?rsf=syn:news:nca:dt:socref

Cronk also sold his qld investment property before moving to sydney and buying a new house there. Of course that's expected if he wants the money to pay for the new house.. but that's the whole point. It's supposed to look normal and expected. How can you really tell if the sale is legitimate or a contact purposely buys it at a slightly inflated price? Cordner just resigned and bought another house. Keary just sold his qld investment property. JWH just bought a new house.

The majority of players have investment properties (https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/n...s/news-story/f26a55ebbeb523c6112475e5c619d318), despite most of them not really possessing much intelligence. The clubs (or the nrl if you're a nobody) set the players up with financial advisers, and Nick Politis has by far the best contacts in the game (https://www.afr.com/news/inside-the-roosters-exclusive-chairmans-club-20131003-jh10y). A lot of them also start businesses and go into real estate after retirement. So there are a lot of little ways you can inject money to a player without it ever being detected. Or it could all be legit but the roosters have a reputation for setting the best players up with wealthy contacts for the right opportunities.

    This is a great article on just how much of a non-event TPA's actually are;

    https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/nr...by-thirdparty-agreements-20180219-h0wayc.html

And to say the TPA system isn't audited is just a flat out lie, of course it is.

    Also from another article for interests sake;

It is known Melbourne Storm benefited most. Storm players earned an extra $788,000 in third parties.

Brisbane was next, more than $200,000 below Melbourne but still commanding more than half a million dollars in third party income. Penrith was third, also benefiting by more than half a million dollars paid to its players in third parties.

The other club significantly above the average last season was Manly, spending more than $300,000.

The bottom club, St George Illawarra, got only a small third party benefit, receiving $26,000 in extra income.
