    The NRL is set to drop the touch judge responsible for the controversial call in last night’s Canberra v Cronulla clash for two weeks.

    Touch judge Ricky MacFarlane raised his flag during the lead-up to a try by Sharks winger Sione Katoa, resulting in several Canberra players stopping.

    The ball did not go out of play - MacFarlane was trying to signify to the referee that there was a knock-on in the lead-up to the try.

    Remarkably, the bunker over-ruled the on field decision of no try, missing the knock on and giving the Sharks the try that effectively ended Canberra’s season.

    Referees boss Bernard Sutton will announce MacFarlane’s two game ban later today.

    His axing to NSW Cup will in effect end MacFarlane’s top grade career as he is unlikely to get back into the top grade under Sutton’s watch.

    But sources in the referees’ ranks are supporting MacFarlane - who has been devastated by his momentary ‘brain snap’.

    “He made the wrong call but the bunker should have gone along with the ref’s call of ‘no try’,” a leading source within the referees’ ranks told Wide World of Sports.

    “Then no one would be talking about the touch judge.

    “Sutton is trying to protect the reputation of the bunker and it is a lot easier for him to throw the touch judge under the bus.”

    A fuming Raiders coach Ricky Stuart blasted the standard of NRL officiating after the game.

    There was so much wrong with the officiating in last night's game.

    Corrupt is a word that gets thrown around far too often on forums and social media when it comes to officiating in professional sports but I think it may be more true here than ever.

    Not in the sense that the game was rigged or that they intentionally tried to influence the result but the fallout seems like it will protect some certain agendas and personnel.

    lol I swear to god we're gonna miss the 8 because of a bunch of retarded 2 point losses where we were robbed.

    We legitimately lost 3 matches by 2 points from bullshit ref decisions. Mbye has been a revelation, Farah is playing like it's 2009 and Benji has been such a huge addition over Reynolds.

    I think we're a shot of making the 8.

    Broncos had 5 in 3 minutes last night for no warning.

    It’s an indictment on modern halves or more accurately, the way modern halves are made to play, that Thurston can decline this much and still be up near the top for try assists and line break assists in a team coming second last.
