Because O'Neill spunked it all on average players and left his successors an absolute mess to clean up.
It's funny that you bring up financial resources where Lerner has spent a lot, yeah cut it down recently, but still spent £24m on Bent only 15 months ago compared to DW who has been cutting the wage bill for the past few years... And Martinez could easily adapt the Villa philosophy if he got rid of Collins and Dunne...
Yeah, average players like Milner, Young and Downing who he got the best out of to make villa reach the European spots. And also the same players who were sold for massive profits after he left giving them sufficient money to rebuild and not become relegation candidates in 2 seasons.
And I'm pretty sure Lerner funded all these players where they made profits but there is also a list of shit expensive players which MoN got it wrong.
Except for the flurry in 08/09 Lerner has pretty much been even in terms of net spent at Villa, if you include last summer where they earned about 20 + million more than they spent. For the last 2 seasons he has been really tightening the purse strings and even for Bent had his hand forced a bit. If he was going to increase that in the future he could have easily then sold the project to Martinez, which is what i said.
He has still often back his managers with funds, might not invest all the player sales into new funds, but still good enough nevertheless and more than at what he would get at Wigan... Villa is just a massive step up from teams like Wigan.
Yeah he got some wrong, but it was mostly ones for 4/5 million or less. But he got many solid players right too. The main problem for them has not been clearing the mess since he left, but not re investing the profits from these players properly or not at all. Plus the managers they have appointed have tried to stretch the team in all different directions, not even getting the best out of the players there.
Was thinking that earlier tbh. Sigurdsson to be gutted at Rodgers leaving. Wouldn't be surprised if he was one of the main reasons he joined Swansea.
Sigurdsson might actually pull out of the Swansea move if Rodgers moves. Also in what world is Aston Villa not a big step up from Wigan? Outside of the season just gone, Villa has finished in the top 10 for four seasons in a row, including 3 Europa League campaigns in a row. But hey, guess one bad season with a terrible manager means Villa is just shit, I'd take Villa's squad and the club in general over Wigan 10 times out of 10.
Villa are a bigger club than Wigan, no doubt. But for Martinez the risk of moving to Villa vs the benefits is too much, IMO unless Lerner is going to back him for a couple of summers with big money to rebuild and also be patient. He has a secure job at Wigan where he won't be sacked probably even if they get relegated, but on the other hand at Villa the pressure will straightaway be more, and the difference in that respect would be more than the move up in terms of squad strength.
Liverpool stalling on paying the 3-5 million it would cost for compensation to the Swans Even though Dalgleish gave up a lot more than that for being sacked which should of been used for this exact reason
Unbelievable to be honest If Rodgers is there main aim then pay the Fucking Compo and like you've said, just use the money Kenny has given up
Reckon he should come back to Reading personally. Better than some of the midfielders you guys put in your first team last season tbh
