    Yeah I mean makes perfect sense. Get a retired centre who made piss poor defensive decisions his whole career to instruct two rookies on defensive decisions. Seems legit.

    I doubt it is but I wouldn't be surprised if he feels let down by the NSW powers that are. Even Mitchell Pearce never got thrown under the bus by NSW, it was generally just the media.

    I was watching Freddy 2 nights ago and when he was asked a question about his bench rotation his rebuttal was that the tactics were right, if Latrell Mitchell had just kicked inside on that last play he had 3 men unmarked underneath the sticks, like how many times do you want to kick the guy publicly? Phil Gould has pretty much dedicated 2 or 3 full segments on TV to address it plus 2 full length articles.

    If it was any other workplace and an employee was humiliated like that I think the natural reaction would be withdrawal from the rest of the group.

    Yeah it's really weird. It seems like the backlash from dropping him and the fact that this is the first time the coaching staff has faced significant adversity has made them just go way over the top in trying to justify the team selections. It's not a good look.

    It should if the person seeking their help does so on the basis that this person knows of where they speak through personal experience; which is clearly why they got someone like Gasnier who has no notable coaching credentials.

    I don’t mind Gould tearing into Mitchell. He’s media, paid for his opinion and I like him for being that rare combination of knowing what he’s talking about and secondly not sugar-coating anything.

    Fittler, however, is off his tree. All he had to say, when asked about the subject, is what any other coach offers; pablum, cliche, and repetition. ‘We just feel Latrell has had some difficulties lately and like all of us at some point in life, is not in a great headspace atm. We feel football comes second to his mental well-being and we as the NSWRL are here to support him and welcome his return when he’s ready.”

    He’s gone the opposite way and essentially, well, to use his own words, started eating his own. Good way to ostracise a bloke and turn him into another Jamie Lyon.

    It’s actually quite rare to see a coach shit on a bloke so openly, especially a player of his quality.
