Not really. If he kept his current form up he was definitely a chance at a bench spot.

  2. Magic AJ Parker

The only chance he has is that he's a Broncos hype beast.

Dude hasn't even played 50 games yet.

Players like Paul Vaughan, Junior Paulo, Jordan Mclean even Shannon Boyd would be ahead of him for their debuts afaic.

  3. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Exactly. He's starting to get some media attention, and Taumalolo come out saying he could be better than him. Few more big games with some fancy offloads and a try or 3 and he would definitely be in with a chance.

I was always under the impression that it was 50k a game?

You need to remember we're talking about NSW based selectors here, nothing is impossible. Never forget Sione Mata'utia has played for Australia.

Yeah but then who do you pick at halfback for QLD? I mean DCE, Morgan and Munster are all vying for the 6. Cherry-evans may not be suited to halfback as well as five-eighth but isn't he still the best option available? We don't really have a dominant halfback player of a suitable ability now that both Cronk and Thurston at retired from rep football.

  7. Cribbage RG Cribb

Right, but there are different ways to use your 7. Picking DCE and Munster and making DCE play as a dominant first receiver (as he'd have to playing with Munster) would definitely not be the best use of your resources IMO, but it seems the likely outcome. I'd pick DCE and Morgan and have them play as split halves, left/right.

The problem is that Kevvie doesn't even see the issue in this way. It's not a problem he'd try to solve even if he could; he thinks DCE is a specialist halfback and would hesitate picking him in any other role other than literally his worst realistic role.

As would I, in the team I just provisionally wrote down but left/right halves is not in direct opposition to a dominant/support dynamic. It's always a combination, to varying extents, of the two.

I just wonder what a Morgan/Munster combination would've turned out like if Morgs had been following on from last year with no Thurston.

  10. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

You're deducing this from his non-selection/non-mention when JT was injured last year, yeah?

  11. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I’m honestly thinking Hunt is going to be our halfback. And it scares the shit out of me.

  12. Cribbage RG Cribb

Not just that, but what he said about it after it all blew up. He said that if Cronk was out he'd have considered DCE because he's a halfback but that he wanted a five-eighth to replace Thurston.

I found that unfathomably dire, not only because DCE had actually been playing five-eighth all season, but because DCE is the most similar player to Thurston in terms of style in the entire NRL.

  13. Cribbage RG Cribb

Oh yeah indeed, I didn't phrase that all that well. I meant I'd have them play more as less just as modern split halves.

Having DCE play a lot of first receiver isn't ideal but it'd probably work out okay as long as the other half was also proficient at that, so he wouldn't be there all the time. Munster and Milford just wouldn't be great matches for him IMO. And this entire framework isn't something Kevvie will be factoring in because he doesn't seem to like the idea of DCE playing anywhere other than first receiver. He seems to live in bizarroworld on this issue just because of the order Barrett names his players in on Tuesdays.

It could still work out okay even despite all that because DCE is a gun and could adapt back to that role, but if he didn't manage it straight away it wouldn't surprise me either, and the fact that Kevvie doesn't even seem to recognise this problem at all is an extra problem for Queensland IMO.

What does everyone's NSW origin team look like? I think this is the first time in a long time that I've just been really stumped. I don't follow the game as much but I also think there's been a bit of a generational shift in the sense that a lot of the guys I grew up with have become shit and a lot of the guys I think are good, are not that much better than the guys around them. Also there's nowhere to find stats which is annoying.

    Anyway:

    1. James Tedesco
    2. Tom Trbojevic
    3. Jack Bird
    4. Clint Gutherson
    5. Josh Mansour
    6. Matt Moylan
    7. Nathan Cleary
    8. Ryan James
    9. Nathan Peats
    10. Paul Vaughan
    11. Tyson Frizzell
    12. Boyd Cordner
    13. Jake Trbojevic

    14. David Klemmer
    15. Shannon Boyd
    16. Wade Graham
    17. Blake Austin

I don't know if I'm even remotely on the right track with this.

    Thoughts?

  15. Lukic L Popovic

I reckon I'm way off given neither centre has played yet this year haha.

  16. Cribbage RG Cribb

I don't hate it other than Ryan James.

  17. Lukic L Popovic

Yeah he was 3rd last I picked after the centres. I think he might be one of those guys that's inexplicably better at origin than fg - kinda like Lillyman/Myles types.

I'm stumped otherwise cause I really don't want to pick Woods/Fifita haha. I did think of Campbell-Gillard but I dunno if he's actually good. He's spoken about a lot though. Maybe McLean? DeBelin? Merrin? Twal/Eisenhuth? Idk our other props tbh.

At this stage I think Maloney has to be picked. He's far from great but the guy has made line breaks and set up tries in Origin. No one else has with any sort of consistency. I dislike the club combinations ethos, but Cleary isn't there because of Maloney. He's there because Pearce is a repeat, historical fuck up in Origin despite being the best halfback in NSW.

    1.Tedesco
    2.T.Trbojevic
    3.Bird
    4.
    5.
    6.Maloney
    7.Cleary
    8.Woods
    9.
    10.Klemmer
    11.Cordner
    12.Frizelli
    13.J.Trbojevic

    14.Peachey
    15.Vaughan
    16.Boyd/Fifita
    17.Graham

I'd seriously consider picking Cook ahead of Peats, who to me, offers very little. Honestly though, NSW just need to do a half decent job of selections this year and they'll win. We are short on proven props and proven halves. Even picking shunts like Pearce and Dugan, they'll probably still win given we don't get a home match until Game 3.

Still don't like Tedesco at the back given his lack of passing but with neither Moylan or Hayne playing there at club level, it's hard to go past him.

  19. Lukic L Popovic

    Lawrence for 2nd row, tbh.

  20. Magic AJ Parker

    Cleary out for 10 weeks.

Not that I would've picked him yet anyway, still way too green.
