Please don't play fucking Pearce again. He was OK in Game 1 but was horrid here.

Can't wait for Pearce to dominate for the Roosters in the opening rounds next year and demand selection because he's in the form of his career and has matured and buried his origin demons.

Best thing for next year is we blooded so many rookies, they went well and we got rid of the dead wood; Guerra, Thaiday, O'Neill, Myles etc.

lol gotta be the first to put my hand up about Munster. So, so wrong. He was excellent.

A lot of support through social media for Andrew Johns to take over as head coach.

One thing is for sure, I don't think Daley will last.

Ah I love this position we're in now. I was dreading it but with the rookies standing up, and hopefully no injuries we're in a good spot.

Assuming Slater and Cronk play again. Cooper and Holmes, like Oates, do not deserve to be dropped, but they pretty much have to be at full strength imo.

Gotta pick Pearce again. Never mind that he never found the ground with a single one of his kicks, gifted the ball to QLD on a few occasions and let in the try that sealed the game. THIS will be his year. Come on Daley!

What's the fascination with finding the ground on kicks? There's no advantage to it with modern day fullback like Slater & Tedesco who cover so much ground and positionaly are excellent on kicks. I just don't get the perception of finding the ground makes it a better kick, it's not 10 years ago when you used to be able to kick in behind a fullback or winger, it's so rare to see that these days and if you do it's generally the result of poor positioning by the winger/fullback.

I thought it was interesting that QLD started to use the same tactics NSW did in game 1 with their kicking game by bombing to the wingers with no intention of a contest but instead to box them in and trap them inside their own 20. Actually worked really well for them and limited the start NSW were getting to their sets. Means NSW also had to waste 1 tackle every set having to centre the play too.

A successful kick in the modern day game is where the team kicking can 1) dictate where the opposition play the ball on tackle one and 2) limit the metres that the opposition can make. It means hang time, not finding the ground is often the most efficient method.

I'm only going off the top of my head here and I'm sure there were a couple more but the only kicks I can remember finding the ground was Cam Smith's grubber that rolled over the dead ball line, Jaryd Hayne's embarrassing attempt at a grubber and Cam Smith trying to kicking 1 tackle early from his own half trying to catch the winger out, even then Tedesco still managed to swoop on it and return the ball over the 30m line. I'm not saying kicks that find the ground can't be effective but they're the low percentage play in the modern day game and they're not as common as they were in an era when I'd suggest you probably watched more football than you do now.

Quick question did Cooper Cronk find the ground with any of his positional kicks throughout the series?

Finding the ground isn't as important as it used to be because of the 7 tackle restart. Tactical kicking has been eroded to the point where the mid-field bomb is the dominant option. That is a real shame imo. You don't see long range kicks aimed at the in-goal any more.

Pearce found the ground in the 30th minute but it was well in front of Slater and bounced straight to him. That's an example of finding the ground being completely useless.

That was purely due to the unlucky bounce. It sat up perfectly for him. Would've been the best long range kick of the night if it hadn't.

But yeah I agree with Magic that the importance of finding the ground is very low these days. I think it has a lot less to do with fullback positioning and everything to do with the ridiculous penalty you pay for kicking it dead.

There is no substitute for a long range, low trajectory kick that sits up in or near the in-goal from 60m out but as was said, it's low percentage these days.

To add to that, if you are kicking from behind your own 40m line, it's not really your halfbacks fault if the fullback catches it on the full and returns it to the 30. The main issue is your go forward for your first 5 tackles.

No way Daley stays on next year imo.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Pearce will never play Origin again. I think his time has finally come. However unfairly he's getting criticised for this loss, the inability to lead his side to victory in Game 2 will not be forgotten. There is an increasingly strong element of guilty by association because of 7 series campaigns for 7 losses. I think they'll start overlooking his club form because it just doesn't warrant the sort of blind faith he's been shown. This was supposed to be his year with a traditional hooker and a more dominant role.

A lot depends on the coach next year and if a NSW half produces at club level but I think he's done.

  17. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

And I think Andrew Johns is an awful choice for coach.

  18. Magic AJ Parker

    Joey would be awful.

If you're going to go down the QLD road and pick a head coach who's clearly there to build a strong culture and keep the camp happy ala Kevin Walters then I think you could go Brad Fittler. Say what you want about his technical & tactical knowledge of the game but you can't deny what he did in the back end of '07 and then in '08 at the Roosters and what he's done consistently with a far inferior city side every year. He clearly knows how to bring a squad of players together and get the best out of them & you just know it would bring Gus back into the fold.

It means you've got to stack the rest of the coaching staff with extremely knowledgeable staff. Ala Dean Pay, Jason Taylor etc.

Reality is all the best coaches are in club land and there's got to be some sort of compromise somewhere.

  19. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Reality is aside from Bellamy whose style and player selections are 100% suited to club football not rep, Robinson is the best coach in NSW. He's obviously going to have Pearce and Tedesco in the same spine, as well as Cordner, Ferguson and has previously coached Maloney.

It won't happen but I would fear that more than anyone else (aside from Gould, which also won't happen).

The 7th tackle restart on dead ball line kicks is a rule I hate especially considering some of the in-goals are quite small compared to others.
