Carbohydrates (primarily glucose in humans) are one of the major sources of energy in the human body where the energy within the glucose molecule is used to produce ATP (adenine triphosphate), the source of energy for the majority of chemical reactions within the body. This occurs through 3 phases: glycolysis (the splitting of glucose), the Citric Acid Cycle and the Electron Transport Chain.

Glycolysis involves the splitting of the 6 carbon glucose molecule into two 3 carbon pyruvate molecules via a series of 10 enzyme catalysed reactions with a net gain of 2 ATP molecules per molecule of glucose entering the pathway. Electrons are also passed to NAD+ (nicotine adenine diphosphate, a type of electron carrier) where they are later passed on to the Electron Transport Chain where the majority of the body's ATP supply is produced.

Step 1: The glucose molecule is phosphorylated (has a phosphate group added to it) to produce glucose-6-phosphate in a reaction catalysed by hexokinase. This step requires one ATP molecule as the source of the phosphate group.

Step 2: Glucose-6-phosphate (6 membered ring structure) is then isomerized (structurally rearranged) into fructose-6-phosphate (5 membered ring structure) by the enzyme glucose phosphate isomerase.

Step 3: Fructose-6-phosphate is then phosphorylated by phosphofructokinase to produce fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. This step also requires an ATP molecule as the source of a phosphate group.
