Player movements and rumours

I'm pretty torn about it to be honest.

On the one hand, when listening to him speak about playing here, it's hard not to get excited. I'm actually seeing Cronk more of an asset off the field than worrying too much about him winning us a comp. I think he can bring that discipline that SBW brought to us and I think he can turn Pearce into a top tier halfback.

On the other hand though, I have always had a soft spot for Pearce. I'd be gutted if he left. Most of my adult life I've seen the team all happy one year and nekminnit something happens and the coach loses them and it turns to shit. It's why we've gone through 6 coaches in 16 years. I'm concerned that if Pearce goes or spends the year sulking it will turn into a toxic culture and they will resent Robinson for it and he will lose the players. This is my biggest fear and the biggest reason why I'm torn.

That's largely contingent on success though. Wests for example developed toxic culture because they suck. If Easts are top 4 or top 2 all year with Cronk steering the ship no one will care if little Mitch is pushed to the wayside.

  3. GYR DW Lewis

They'll definitely care if he leaves though

Such a typical bandwagoner thing to say.

I still don't get why all the talk is about Pearce leaving instead of Keary. Just because it's the 7 jersey? I know Keary had a good year but Pearce is obviously better. Pearce's biggest liability has always been his attacking kicks and his inability to grind a team into the corners/restarts. He's always been talented but as dumb as the tattoos he chose. Surely having Cronk take care of the organising and letting Pearce play a more natural role would suit him? Not to mention Keary can probably get a lot more money now after how he played this season so he has incentive to be released and get more.

Mate you're fucking delusional if you don't think that's how a majority of supporters think no matter what club they support.

If you're calling me a bandwagon supporter you're even more off your rocker than I previously thought.

No you will care and Magic will care and you're in a minority before a ball has even been kicked. Wait until they're in a prelim or the GF and see how long the Pearce nostalgia lasts.

Emm is right. Most don't care and those that do will turn as soon as a piece of silverware comes along.

Not to mention that once the 2 years are done you still have a proper halfback whereas if you let Pearce go they could be fucked in 2 years.

  9. GYR DW Lewis

I don't give a shit what the fans think. I'm talking about the players. Players who have been playing with Pearce for 10 years, are best mates etc. They will care.

If Pearce sulks at having to move positions then he's unprofessional. If he leaves and the players revolt or lose confidence in Robinson then they're unprofessional. Neither of these things will happen if they're winning games.

  11. GYR DW Lewis

Yeah because NRL players are the epitome of professionalism

Ugh. Where was all this talk when SKD was shuffled on? They're professional footballers for god's sake. They're more than welcome to feel aggrieved if Pearce goes but then they get on the training paddock and work. You're talking about developing a "toxic" culture. When does that ever happen at a successful club winning games? I don't care how long Pearce has been a Rooster the idea that Robinson would lose the confidence of the players by replacing him with one of the best and most thorough halves in the last 20 years, is frankly absurd.

  13. GYR DW Lewis

SKD was off contract and leaving regardless. I'm not saying it'll happen, I'm saying it's a concern I have with this so there's nothing for you to dispute here. Robbo was on the verge of being let go because he was starting to lose the players in 2016. I can tell you that as a fact. Your point is based on the assumption that we will still have a successful season. Well I don't really care what you think, I think it's possible ala 2016 that we won't have a good season IF the players resent Robbo for it.

I'm with GYR, playing groups can become best mates, I'm sure there would've been talk after this year's prelim loss about building sonethong special etc. To shit on a pretty successful stalwart could easily upset the apple cart.

Toolman definitely right re Keary too.

  15. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Wasn't he starting to lose the players precisely because they were having a bad season and as you said at the time, he wasn't changing anything despite all the losses?

I think the Roosters are really pushing the limits here, on two fronts.

Firstly, they're really pushing the limit on exactly how fucking soulless their fans can be. If you have the third best club halfback in the comp, who's 28 and played at the club for ten years as a one club-player, won a premiership and multiple minor premierships ... and you shaft him for a half who is admittedly marginally better but is 33 and was contemplating retirement, that's fucking cold as ice. They've really doubled down on their identity as the short-termist club looking to buy whoever might improve their roster on paper by fucking 2%. I think fans who might like to think the club is about more than that might be fucking pissed off with that sort of shit. They've always been more like that any other club, but they've basically gone #FullAI on this front.

Secondly, their really pushing the boundaries in terms of people thinking the salary cap actually fucking works. If you've got a halfback earning $800,000 per year playing off the fucking bench, then there should be some serious problems with the rest of your squad. You shouldn't be able to sign three marquee halves without having massive holes in your roster if the cap works as designed. I've always dismissed the "lol Roosters are over the cap" talk as conspiracy theories from armchair accountants who support rival clubs, but nah fuck it. If the salary cap works the Roosters should have a fucking shit squad having over-invested in halves. If both Keary and Pearce stay and they make the top eight anyway (which they will, for certain), then it's time to just abolish the fucking cap altogether. At least everything would be fair and above board then.

I've known the Roosters were shunts forever and rightly despised them, but this really is something else.

Fans have to.hold clubs accountable for this sort of shit imo, I never renewed my Penrith membership following them axing Luke Lewis as I just don't think it's what a club should be about.

Don't you have to have 30 players under the salary cap? Or does the 2nd tier cap factor some of that in as well?
