Also, two evenly matched teams, the team throwing the line out are winning about 65% of their own line out. Sound reasonable?

What is the the likelihood of this sim getting more 20-40% of the way through a season before disbanding?

  3. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

With me running it, very high.

The bigger issue is whether I have the time and ability to actually build a working sim.

I would say it should be slightly higher. 65% just seems a bit low to me, but I could be totally wrong.

I should add, that the opposing team are not winning 35%

The split is currently about 65/30/5

Attacking Team/Defending Team/Infringement in the Line Out.

I think that figure is too low. A lineout running on 65% would definitely be considered a poor lineout. I'd usually expect closer to 80%.

To put it into context, the London Irish lineout, usually the best in the premiership here, nearly always runs at over 90%.

Also, Eds mentioned that the openside is usually the first man to the breakdown on opposition ball, before the blindside. I'd have thought this was pretty obvious, given that teams attack the open side a lot more than they attack down the blind side...

Tweaked lineout to more like: 75:18:7

Well, whilst helpful, this isn't too relevant as I'm comparing two teams of identical line out ability with this at the moment. 75% to the attacking team sounds much more realistic than 65% though.

Sounds a lot better to me. How does that 20% and 8% not straight throws you mentioned earlier factor into the 7% though?

To be fair, I'd suggest that this isn't actually how it works, and that it's not possible to give a figure for this. Two opposing teams with very well drilled lineouts would generally retain more of their own ball than two teams with poor lineouts, even though both matches are between opponents of identical ability. Probably not worth taking that into account for the purposes of this sim though.

Yeah, this is a fair point. The way I've built it, it does a check on the skill of the hooker first and if they fail, then the line out will fail (either through not being straight or a poor throw). Ignoring the hooker, and assuming a decent throw has been made - how often do the opponents pre-empt the throw and manage to steal?

Maybe it's not worth worrying about yet; see how it works in practise and go from there.

As mentioned, the Line Out breaks down into two phases. The sim does a skill check on the hooker first before deciding whether to do do a proper line out check.

Just thought I'd chuck in some massive props for Heef doing all the hard work here. I'm pretty keen to see some stuff happening here ey!

Just a quick check here. If the lineout throw isn't straight, then the next play is a scrum with the feed to the team who weren't throwing in. Also, if a scrum collapses, it (normally) just gets reset. Feed to the team who were originally feeding?

  16. Eds E Ames

    All correct.

  17. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Sweet. Getting somewhere. The engine is now properly simulating a scrum, can decide what the resulting play will be based on the outcome and will calculate a gained yardage based on the dominance at the scrum.

Infringement at the lineout ---> Penalty?

Who is more likely to infringe at the lineout? Presumably the team not throwing?

  19. Eds E Ames

(Assuming you're not counting a not straight throw as an infringement here, as you've covered that previously)

    Yeah, it'd be a penalty.

Very, very rarely happens though. But yeah, the team with the ball hardly ever infringes.

  20. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Yeah. You see a case of line out interference about once every 5-10 games I guess. Anyway, I've built it in - seems to be occurring a little bit too frequently at the moment, but I'll make sure when it does happen ---? Penalty to Attacking Side.

Sim now has up to 10 phases that can happen in a row and they're all feeding each other. The only plays built at the moment are scrums and line-outs though, so we're still a long way away, but I do think this is going to be possible.
