  1. Baxter MJ Deane

He said any club would need to offer more than 50m euros

  2. BoyBlunder BOY Blunder

and 50 mill euros is £35 mill so the SS article I read just did the conversion

  3. cpr CP Raftery

    So €50,000,001 if you're Arsenal ;)

Amazing that people will remember that saga with us in mind as the joke party while Liverpool were ignoring release clauses.

  5. cpr CP Raftery

Haha if you've read any of the digs I've thrown at Ikki recently (I wouldn't blame you for not TBH) I've regularly thrown that one back at him

  6. Baxter MJ Deane

Well it's not just United and it's not £35m - it's MORE than that

  7. cpr CP Raftery

FFS, €50,000,002 and not a Euro more.....

  8. BoyBlunder BOY Blunder

Yeah true, but I've not really read anyone else being linked with him tbf.

  9. Cabinet96 OTN Wood

Like there's not about two clubs in the world he wouldn't really improve...

  10. Jager LO Townsend

Otamendi left out of Valencia's preseason shoot apparently.

Depay really showing his worth this first 45 mins. Should have had a hattrick really.

Looks like wel miss out on Ottamendi though, just not willing to pay 35 mill for him. Having said that Smalling has looked a beast so far, probably been our best player

  12. Furball G Furball

How fucking bad is Wayne Rooney, honestly.

  13. BoyBlunder BOY Blunder

He always has been and always will be a form player. Once he gets ticking he'll score every week.

Happy with that result. Depay could have had 5 - he definitely looks raw though. Very rough around the edges but his 2 goals and that ball for felli at the end there were sublime

  14. Teacups CJ Evans

Yeah a bit worried about Rooney. That flick that could have landed a hattrick for Depay was brilliant, though. Chicharito wasn't too bad after coming on.

Looks like we missed out on Pedro and Otamendi. Otamendi hurts more because we need him more.

  15. BoyBlunder BOY Blunder

Too much for his age though. 35 mil for a 28 yo cb is outrageous.

Im probably one of the few United fans who doesnt want us to sign a cb or winger though. I really want the Smalling and Jones partnership to blossom (Smallings looking very good atm). The only trouble is the injury proneness of the pair. As for wingers anyone we sign limits the development of Januxaj Pereira and wilson.

Smalling really grew into the role when paired with McNair, and was clearly the senior partner in defence. I think he suffers alongside Jones, who's been hyped up to be a defensive leader, future captain, and capable enough with the ball at his feet to play further up. Smallings more of these than Jones is, and his game suffers trying to accomodate Jones taking those roles.

LVG needs to make it clear to the pair that the pecking orders changed, and Smallings the no 1 of the pair.

  17. Verigoat S Verigotta

I don't think he suffers alongside Jones at all

Last year they played as a centreback pairing 6 times, and they didn't lose. It was only due to a massive amount of injuries and the fact that half the games they were trying 3 at the back where 2 of them tended to be blackett/rojo/evans why the defence is remembered as being shit last year. It's because it was a patch up job most of the time.

I'm happy to have this thrown back at my face afte christmas but when they're both fit and they both get some games with each other I think the defence will look solid

They've never really gelled as a pair though. I do believe they can, and it'll work really well, but with Jones in a Terry/Vidic style defensive rock, and Smalling taking on a more expansive role looking to link defence to midfield. Ever since we signed Jones he's been lauded as the person who can do that, who's good enough to play in defence and midfield etc, but I think its time we recognised that it should be Smalling for that and get Jones settled as the stopper.

van Gaal will be sacked/have quit by March anyway.

  20. Uppercut CB Faldo

Smalling's distribution is terrible imo. Jones's isn't good enough either, but Smalling's is definitely worse. Improving, but still really poor.

For now it should be Smalling playing every game and Blind/Rojo/Jones partnering depending on whether the situation demands a passer or a destroyer. I like that he's gone with Blind so far in games we should be winning, and he made a great pass for Depay's second the other night. Jones is injured for another few weeks but will need to wait his turn.
