Cueto to retire at the end of the season. Always loved him

Conrad Smith gone after the RWC :( bit sad. Off to France.

What's with the whole 'oh he plays his club rugby abroad, we're not selecting him' nonsense the big nations pull?

There's probably a valid reason, it just seems weird to someone who's coming to rugby from football.

If that wasn't in place competitions like Super Rugby would fail immensely. There's no secret that there's more money overseas (France, Japan etc.) and if the rule wasn't in place, everyone would be playing overseas chasing the big $$$ what's that leave us? One shit poor competition where 10 fans turn up to games with a high turnover of players (it's basically just be a stepping stone into getting a contract overseas).

It keeps the talent in the country. It's no secret that the money just isn't there like football (which is big in Europe)

I think in addition to what Rego says the reason why countries will argue for it is their rugby board will have the power to tell their national clubs when to release players for international training/matches. Obviously if you're playing abroad you don't have this luxury.

Very true. Plus the rugby season/ international season is different depending on the hemisphere. Could end up being some very tired bodies.

I think clubs are obliged to release their players for tests in the official windows, aren't they?

Good half of the Welsh team plays outside of the Principality so they'd be buggered if the French or English employers of their prize cattle said "nah".

Only if it's inside the IRB window.

Indeed. Saints have sucked up a fine for releasing George North for an international outside the window too haven't they?

I just can't comprehend this. Maybe I could understand the All Blacks playing some really really amateur team but 2 unknowns, how could one team be so bad?

Edit: Read the article - protest.

Protest was a bit non-commital, wasn't it? They seemed more worried about getting the "losing point" (when did that become a thing?) for playing than making any serious point about half their team having fucked off because the ref was late due to some waffle and mussel (or whatever else they have in Belgium) related incident.

I love how the losing team kicked a drop too.

Wonder what the score was when that looked a viable option? "We're only 150 down here; come away with points, gather from the restart and bingo..."

French amateur association football also has that. Think it's to punish forfeits and make sure clubs get enough players to the ground.

They wrre at 17/23. Coach was missing too

Yeah it makes alot of sense in leagues where every game isn't guaranteed

That's almost a try a minute... not really plausible if the team is actually playing imo. From that footage they are just waiting around.
