Sunderland 'want Bruce as boss' Sunderland want Wigan boss Steve Bruce to succeed Ricky Sbragia as their new manager, BBC Sport understands. Bruce, 48, has been in charge of Wigan, who finished 11th in the Premier League, since he left Birmingham for the JJB Stadium in November 2007. "Wigan's owner Dave Whelan will not allow Bruce to leave without a fight," said BBC Radio 5 Live's senior football reporter Ian Dennis. The Latics have not confirmed whether they have received an approach. But Dennis added: "Wigan paid Birmingham £3m for his services in November 2007 and I think they would want at least that in return. "If a suitable compensation package can be reached then Bruce will be charged with transforming a Sunderland side that narrowly avoided relegation. 606: DEBATE Is Steve bruce a big enough name? brightonactually "With Ellis Short's takeover imminent there will be money available and Bruce is Sunderland's number one target." American investor Short bankrolled the club's summer transfer spending in 2008 - and he is reportedly on the brink of confirming his buy-out later this week. Sunderland are searching for a third boss in three years after Sbragia, who guided the club to Premier League safety, resigned on Sunday. "We need somebody who will come in and attract the type of player that Sunderland needs," said Quinn. The Black Cats were strongly linked with Gordon Strachan, who resigned as Celtic manager on Monday. Former England manager Steve McClaren, who is currently at Dutch side FC Twente, Croatia head coach Slaven Bilic and ex-Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard have also been linked with the club. Former Hamburg manager Martin Jol was also mentioned in conjunction with the post, but has just joined Ajax. But Dennis added of the Bruce situation: "I expect developments over the next few days." Bruce started his managerial career at Sheffield United in 1998 and has since been in charge of Huddersfield, Crystal Palace and Birmingham in addition to two spells at Wigan. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sunderland/8069299.stm
Portsmouth just got taken over ftr by a much poorer, less superior Arab, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim. He was part of the board involved in the city take over and the one who was banging on about creating a dream team and spending over $100 million on players and shit which lead to him getting told to **** off. I believe he has been running his mouth again by saying he wants to out-do City in spending and turn Pompy into a real force, good stuff. It shall be interesting to see what plans he has for Pompy, what manager he gets in, and what they do in the upcoming transfer window.
That's great news. Pompey have been struggling financially for a long time. This will sure things up for them, balance the books and bring in some quality players. I hope they do well next season.
Lol all these Arabs and their money... money won't buy success tbh... need to slowly build a team. Man City I think are doing that and its good news.
On the contrary, money WILL buy you success in modern football and it is the only way to stay competitive and break the monopolisation of the league(s).
what we really want which will please mister blatter is for even more english clubs spending 100mill on players every transfer season then every year an different english team can win the champions leauge
Seriously though, this applies to any club in Europe. I'm in favour of financial takeovers at clubs that are struggling or not challenging for anything, in order to transform them into a powerhouse through the funds and resources. I supported Abramovich at Chelsea, I supported Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City and now I'm supporting this new UAE guy at Portsmouth. It's for the good of the game that we have more challengers and much more competitiveness for the title and European places.
awta about making a side slowly.. chelsea done that and look at all the awesome players they signed like the crespo's, deco's and know they are ****!
They shouldn't go for any big players in the summer tbh... they maybe need a couple of midfielders and a new defender. I reckon they will do quite well next year depending on who they sign!
