Yeah that's probably true. I like New Zealand a lot but Oceania minus Australia clearly doesn't deserve an automatic qualifying spot.

  2. Furball G Furball

It deserves it as much as Africa, CONCACAF and Asia deserve theirs.

  3. Uppercut CB Faldo

If that were true they wouldn't have just been spanked by the fourth best team in CONCACAF.

After last night you can't moan about how bad Mexico are without implicitly saying that New Zealand are on another level of turd.

Yep. Basically this. You can't argue about developing football in the Pacific Islands, no matter how much you do it, they won't compete internationally.

The thing is a lot of the South East nations like Cambodia etc would be good matches for the teams from Oceania.

  6. Lukic L Popovic

But then you just look at Australia getting spanked 6-0 by France, a team who might not even feature in the world cup.

You can't pick and choose. If Asia, Africa and Concacaf are getting 4+ spots, Oceania deserves 1.

    Deserves it on what grounds?

There are plenty of valid reasons I can think of for branching out into Asia, Africa and Concacaf with more places at a World Cup, but none of them really apply to Oceania.

On the grounds of representation. Its a world cup so the regions should be represented by atleast one team and more if they deserve it on the basis of how good the teams are in comparison to those teams who may miss out from other regions.

Exactly. It's hypocritical to say that it's a world cup so teams in certain confederations deserve a spot, but then to not award one to oceania beause they suck.

Either make it fair as far as representation goes and ensure Oceania gets a spot, or make it a competition of the best and limit it to only a select few outside of Europe and South America. Can't have it both ways.

How does Sepp Blatter keep getting reappointed. I'm not a avid fan obv. but i follow sports news and I'm yet to hear a complimentary word yet bout him.

Oceania minus Australia only has like 10m people. It would make more sense if the British Isles minus England had their own qualifying tournament with an automatic place.

The 2006 qualification slot saw Oceania having to face off against South America, 2010 against Asia, and 2014 against North America. Maybe we'll get lucky for 2018 and we'll only have to brush aside Antarctica.

Doesnt matter how many people you have if you are including other teams based on an non-skill related prerequisite. It is it's own culture and uniqueness.

Sure if you want to play the population game that's fine but you have to make the world cup best of the best like Lukic said. You cant have the best of both worlds with regional inclusion being the reasoning for adding in the extra asian, african and concaf teams but skill level/population being the reason to exclude oceania from automatic entry.

You can't tell me the teams from Europe that will lose their qualifiers starting this weekend wouldnt beat the last qualifiers from concaf/asia and africa. I mean ffs one of Sweden or Portugal is going to miss out IIRC

If they gave Ociana an automatic place they'd probably find a way to put Aus back in there just so they could bang in another Asian team for muh money anyway

Every region should have at least one automatic qualifying berth.

Tahiti was a great story in the Confederations Cup even if they got hammered every game. I'm guessing Australia's participation in 2006 was huge for the sport in Australia and it certainly couldn't harm the game in New Zealand if they qualified again.

Regardless of how strong or weak a region is, it's unfair to make the best team in that region jump through additional hoops to qualify. And it's beyond stupid to effectively tell a region 'hey, we don't really want you at the World Cup.'

Other than votes for Blatter what have Asia or Africa contributed to the game to justify their obscene number of places?

  17. Uppercut CB Faldo

I wouldn't mind throwing Australia back in with Oceania and giving them 1.5 places. In practice the qualifying teams would be exactly the same as they are now, but the criticism of excluding a region wouldn't apply.

It's the World Cup Finals. Not the World Cup. That's the key distinction. At the end of the day, football in Oceania is a dead end. They didn't deserve a full spot when Australia was in the confederation, letterlone now. It's football of low quality, with minimum potential for growth and is not of a financial benefit at all. If it weren't for Wellington playing in the Australian competition then they wouldn't even have a professional team in the entire confederation. In all the other confederations there is some sort of merit to having them in the World Cup finals, but giving out token places to make it a more global event would just cheapen it.

You don't see anybody calling for the likes of Armenia, Luxembourg or Malta to have teams guaranteed spots in the UEFA Champions League group stage, they have to go through a qualification in the same manner that teams from Oceania do for the World Cup finals, for pretty much exactly the same reasoning.

Australia wouldn't want that though. We were never going to progress if we stayed in Oceania. Playing competitively against the likes of Tahiti, Fiji etc. was practically pointless.

Is this the same Lukic who just posts ago was advocating giving europe a heck of a lot more spots because they have better teams?

At the end of the day, you can't just say "Oceania needs an automatic berth because the whole world needs to be represented." If that was the case, we'd need to fit in a spot for Antarctica, and we'd have to sort out the world cup so that a certain number of countries from each continent's sub-regions (eg equal amounts from eastern europe/western europe; equal amounts from northern/middle/southern africa). That way we'd be truly representing the entire world.

As of now, everyone in the world should get a chance to qualify. Obviously, however, the places need to be fiddled so that the quality of football is at its highest.

Exact same can be said about Asia getting 4.5 spots. Why are you so quick to attack Oceania but defend Asia? Anyone that watches football knows that there's only 2 teams worth anything in Asia at the moment, and the confederation getting 4.5 spots is a joke. Australia's going to turn up to the world cup and get smashed 3 times, which New Zealand could've done. At least if New Zealand does it, every confederation is represented. Ok, so maybe there's only 4.5 million people in New Zealand compared to Australia's 20. No potential for growth right? Well what about the loser of Ukraine or France which both have 50 million + populations and would definitely be competitive if they were to reach the finals. Not only are we 'cheapening' the world cup by giving Australia the spot, but we're also missing out on a country (which for this argument lets assume Ukraine is knocked out) with a large potential and a rapidly growing domestic football league where there is a huge market.

Because no one tries to claim the Champions league to be a truly 'European' tournament like the World Cup represents the 'World'. The Champions league is exclusive and by its very name, is to reward champion teams. And it isn't pretty much exactly the same reasoning either. Champions league rewards the best leagues with the most spots. That's why in the round of 32, between Italy, England, Germany, Portugal, Spain, France, Russia and Ukraine, we'll see about of 24 or so of the 32 teams that make, a proportion that Europe and South America should account for.

Look there's absolutely no way you can argue against what I've said. You either make it a true world cup, and ensure that every confederation is represented or you make the world cup a gathering of the best teams and ensure the actual best teams, namely from Europe and South America are given the vast majority of spots.
