Read dickhead. Yes, I that's what I want, but I'm saying that it is hypocritical to try and deny New Zealand for being shit, but give Asia spots for representative purposes.

Also  at the second paragraph. so dense. there are confederations. confederations are given spots.

  2. Furball G Furball

If you can name the competing nations from Antarctica then I'd be more than happy to give them a spot. Muppet.

    WTF

Though I do agree with giving Oceana a whole spot to themselves, I mean they can hardly do worse than some of the shoddy sides we've seen fail massively over the past few years.

But why does Oceania deserve a confederation when Southern Africa and the Middle East (both unrepresented in 2010 discounting South Africa who qualified automatically) don't have one? Oceania shouldn't exist.

What FIFA has done is to strike a balance. You don't have to have the best 32 teams in the world or a team from every confederation. FIFA gives some confederations representative places if they are big enough to justify it.

  5. Notsure SM Green

That's the whole point of having a playoff though. If teams 31-32 in the World Cup are worse than New Zealand then New Zealand will beat them in the playoff. Simple.

The defence for Asia is largely from an economic standpoint. Realistically the cash coming out of the Gulf region, along with Japan, Korea and China, is pretty damn hard to ignore, particularly when you combine it with the population growth of China and the subcontinent. Somebody has to pay the debts that all of European football is racking up.

It's not the potential for growth in a particular country that is being looked at, but growth in the region as a whole. You're right in saying that Australia making it isn't much of a boost to the tournament, but the more chances that any country in the region gets to play at the highest level, the more they'll be able to learn from it and subsequently improve the competition in the region as a whole. Similar reasoning is why North America gets 3.5 to pretty much try to ensure the qualification of the US and Mexico. Either of those countries missing out, regardless of their relative quality to Portugal or France, would be a much larger economic impact. Africa is a bit of a different case, it was pretty clearly a region Blatter supported and the performances of sides like Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria in international tournaments shows the effect of increasing spots to enable improvement. What Africa doesn't bring is the financial benefits these other areas could.

So you're saying the UEFA Champions League is entirely a lie that you don't have an issue with? It's not representative of Europe as a whole, nor is it a competition consisting solely of champion teams because you don't actually have to be champion of anything to qualify, and it certainly isn't a league. How is it that you're advocating the rights of Oceania within FIFA but dismissing the rights of minor countries in UEFA? It's even more confusing to me when you consider that the reasoning for the minor confederations losing their automatic spots back in the past is exactly the same line of reasoning that I'm following to reject your argument for Oceania. There's no reward from any practical standpoint, be it footballing or political, to give them a spot.

He isnt saying solely Oceania, thats just his example to show his viewpoint. Lukic is saying all areas should be represented OR have the best teams playing which would be like 28 of the 32 teams coming from S.A or Europe

  8. Jabba HJ Bots

But why then does Asia get assured spots when if they had to playoff against some of the South American or European teams who dont make it they'd lose.

  9. Jabba HJ Bots

If this was the case Oceania would have an automatic spot because quite clearly it is the weakest region and atm just gets thrust to the side like the ugly duckling.

  10. Notsure SM Green

Speirz covered it well. Asia is a huge region in the world with many globally significant countries. FIFA have decided to strike a balance between money, geographical representation and on the field quality. It makes more sense to strike a balance then to say it has to be this way or that.

  11. Notsure SM Green

Oceania is the weakest but has zero potential to grow. There is one professional club in the whole confederation and that can't even break even. FIFA don't care whether football grows in the region because it is so small and will not generate additional revenue. Africa and Asia are clearly different stories.

  12. Speirz DG Speirs

Yeah, but it will forever be that ugly duckling, regardless of how many places they get. There's nothing there worth investing that heavily in when you compare it to the other regions.

  13. Furball G Furball

Which is frankly a diabolical attitude to take.

  14. Starris ER Starris

    I totally agree!

Isn't FIFA corrupt as hell anyway?

  15. Notsure SM Green

I think it makes most sense to put the most resources into somewhere that is more likely to grow. You could spend $2 or $50 million and it probably won't change the quality of football in Fiji

  16. Uppercut CB Faldo

Do you think they should guarantee a place to Northern Asia? The region containing Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Mongolia isn't really any different to the Pacific Islands. Continents are arbitrary.

FIFA is one of the most despicable sporting collaboratives in the world if not the worst. Worse than the BCCI afaic, they however have the financial and political shove to get away with whatever they like afaic.

The whole bidding process is wildly corrupt and I personally rate the govts use of tav dollars to undertake the 0.0000001% chance that FIFA was not always going to appoint whoever brought the most currency into Sepp and his appointed constituents pockets is one of the biggest wastes of my and for many your tax dollars that I've seen.

The entire sport is tarnished by those at the top. FIFA Fairplay my fucking ass. Cocksuckers.
