Retro mafia: Interest thread

Discussion in 'Forum Games and Activities' started by Howe, Mar 8, 2013.

You'd be happy to compete in ten mafia games simultaneously, without making any errors or forgetting what's occurred in which game?

Love Eds and I both using 10 as an example :p

    I'm turning into Prez

    help me

  4. MrPrez CM Dyer

No. People would have had their games fully prepped if we hadn't been using the particular queue system we have been until now. It's just unfair on those who have been waiting.

If you're going to abolish the 1-game-at-a-time rule, at least let those who have been waiting have a chance to run their games.

  5. MrPrez CM Dyer

I remember the days when you used to like me :(

If they have a game ready and are waiting sure they should to before hand. But if they are just waiting to even make the game, and someone else makes a game that person should go when they want.

  7. Eds E Ames

That makes sense, but the people in the queue haven't made their game because they assumed we were still on the one-game unwritten rule. I'm happy to play more than one game at once but there's definitely a limit (perhaps at two, IMO), but those people who waited get priority over Howe, even if I'd much rather play Retro mafia than something I know nothing about like Firefly.

People who create games want to know that their "creations" are being fully appreciated and played as a main priority for most people. Adding more games at a time just lessens the value of games, I mean how good would SWII or LOTR Two Towers have been if people were distracted with other games at the same time? Less posting, less importance, less concentration.

  9. Eds E Ames

Skippos, N11, Mousey & Escath are in front of Howe in the queue. If they all agree for you to go in front, then it's fine, you can start.

If others want to run games fine. I'm not saying that him waiting his turn isn't fair but people need to pull their fingers out if they're waiting their turn as soon as a game finishes. Having a quick look at the BSG thread it looks like over 50% of the people are dead. So given that no one else has an interest thread on the go yet it is perfectly likely that there will be no game happening before someone else starts one. At least Howe is organised.

The whole reason we're even having this discussion is because mafia has got going again. It lay dead for months because there wasn't any interest breeding further interest.

Then look at what happened as soon as a couple started up here again. More people got involved, epicmafia started up again, loads more posting in the Mafia Stuff thread, more ideas, more mafia.

This is of course all in addition to the fact that people don't have to play games they don't want to, and if yeah there were half a dozen or so games I expect another starting wouldn't get many sign ups to play. But if you've got a game ready, people want to play and are keen to start then there's no reason to hold back to satisfy some imaginary queue in which there's obligation for the people ahead of you to even do anything.

But apparently I want to start 10 games now. I give up.

It takes ages to create a game. Just using me, I keep putting it off until I know I'll need to because it's a good few hours to do and I always get distracted. Skippos is ahead of me so I'm not gonna do it before he's started.

I don't mind if Howe goes now, fwiw.

Look, I want to play a number of games in the queue, but I don't want to play them at the same time because I like to focus on a single game or two. Even if that's not what you personally want, you're still likely to play worse if you're involved in more games. It's just basic common sense really.

The situation we're in now has only occurred because those in the queue atm thought there was a one-game rule. If we give them a chance to sort themselves out, and they get their game going, then good. If not, you're welcome to swoop in and take over. They get priority because it's something they've been thinking about for a while whereas you've just finished hosting another game.

I can't even go now because I'd spoil BSG. I just think the queue serves no purpose, other than kill ideas. If anyone else has a game planned, please, go ahead.

BSG is in about d3. There'll be a good week or two before it's finished. Making an interest thread now would be nigh pointless because you'd have to have reconfirmations and such. Not everybody rolls like that.

Oh please. You're completely twisting my (and Eds') words. Noone said you wanted to start 10 games now. That example was just to highlight that there is such a thing as "too many games," which you disagreed with.

I'm personally not against multiple games at once, to a point. I'm against you pushing the queue. You've just finished modding a game. Others are keen to start games that have been waiting for longer than you. There is a queue. If you disagree with that principle, then argue that, but don't just think it's your god-given right to jump to the start of the queue. As Eds says, check with the others who have been waiting and FOLLOWING THE MAFIA CODE OF THE SITE, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY AGREE WITH IT. Just because you want to change it, doesn't mean it's right to leapfrog those who have been waiting longer. Put yourself in their shoes.

In a way I agree but how else do you suggest we do it? I think a poll based on what people want as the next game really is a much better idea because first-come-first-served really doesn't promote decent games. It'd also promote innovative thinking as mods would have to think up some interesting ideas as well as a strong theme to get votes.

I just fundamentally disagree that 3+ games running at the same time is ever a good thing.

I can' get my head around why you'd think so. Interest breeds interest. During the peak of SW mafia when interest was at its highest, there was also a filler game going on as well as games in at least two subbies that I know of. At any rate, there's no reason to sign up to multiple games if you don't want to be in them but every time an interest thread starts it's usually got all the same people on the list.

  18. Eds E Ames

I want to be in most games because I find them interesting.
I don't want to be in more than 2 games at once because I lose my focus, and play much worse as a result. Generally quality decreases.

I imagine there's many more people in the same boat.

What do you think of the poll idea? Do you not think that would create interest?

  19. Skippos SM Morgan

As I said earlier - howe's already got the interest so no issue with him jumping me.

But I'd like to go straight after

  20. Howe JHF Howe

Well I guess I'll leave it at that then. I'm really not trying to push my game or anything, I just really don't like the queue in general.

I think the big problem with polls is that it might lead to people shitting on games based on who the member is without any actual evidence. For example I probably would've voted against a morgieb game a few months ago because he has a habit of not finishing things, but he actually ran a very good filler game. Similarly people might consistently vote against someone like weldone because he's weldone when for all we know he could run it really well.
