Just a thread for talk about QLD players, primarily regarding Origin but also prospective players.

Looking at our depth of players. Player ages on 31st December. I've only listed players in positions that I think they're a decent chance of playing a game in at some point in the relatively near future.

Fullback: Darius Boyd (29), Billy Slater (33) Greg Inglis (29), Anthony Milford (22), Valentine Holmes (21), Dane Gagai (25), Cameron Munster (22).
Wing: Corey Oates (22), Dane Gagai (25), Darius Boyd (29), Valentine Holmes (21), Kyle Feldt (24), Justin O'Neill (25), Edrick Lee (24).
Centre: Greg Inglis (29), Justin O'Neill (25), Will Chambers (28), Dane Gagai (25), Michael Morgan (25), Cameron Munster (22).
    Five-eighth: Johnathan Thurston (33), Michael Morgan (25), Daly Cherry-Evans (27), Anthony Milford (22), Ben Hunt (26).
Halfback: Cooper Cronk (33), Johnathan Thurston (33), Daly Cherry-Evans (27), Ben Hunt (26).
Hooker: Cameron Smith (33), Jake Friend (26), Jake Granville (27), Andrew McCullough (26), James Segeyaro (26).
Prop: Matt Scott (31), Nate Myles (31), Josh McGuire (26), Josh Papalii (24), Jacob Lillyman (32), Dylan Napa (24), Sam Thaiday (31).
Lock: Corey Parker (34), Aidan Guerra (28), Josh Papalii (24), Nate Myles (31), Dylan Napa (24), Matt Gillett (28).
Second Row: Matt Gillett (28), Sam Thaiday (31), Josh Papalii (24), Aidan Guerra (28), Gavin Cooper (30), Ethan Lowe (25).

Then we obviously have a host of, mainly young, players who aren't really near Origin at the moment but could be in the future.

Moses MBye, Corey Norman, Joe Ofahengaue, Ashley Taylor, Korbin Sims, Chris Grevsmuhl, Kirisome Auva'a, Jayden Nikorima, etc.

And there are players who I think could do a job at a pinch if asked but who I don't think will ever play Origin, or not again. Barba, McQueen, Hannant, Bukuya etc.

Who should go after this series?

I think Thaiday and Myles have to be moved on. Thaiday only performs when he is off contract.

  4. Alec AD Funkotron

Matt Parcell could end up a gun hooker. He hasn't set the world on fire at Manly yet, but he's a huge talent IMO.

  5. Julian BJ Taylor

Looking at those sort of lists always has Josh Papalii jumping out at me. He's played 120 or so first grade games and should have played more rep footy so far than his 15 or so for Qld and Australia combined. He's only just turned 24 and while it's debatable that he's the best edge forward in the game, I think it's hard to contest the notion that he's at least the most consistent.

  6. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Yeah Papalii and Milford strike me because of their age.

  7. Julian BJ Taylor

Milford is just an absolute gun I don't think anyone disputes that. Papalii is a player that sort of goes unnoticed a lot of the time IMO. I reckon most casual league fans would presume he's nearing thirty too.

  8. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Probably a bit of the opposite with Gillett being almost 30 already.

  9. Magic AJ Parker

Jarrod Wallace is one who desrerves a mention could easily see him play a similar role to what Lilyman did.

  10. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

He needs to do more at club level before even being considered.

  11. Magic AJ Parker

To be considered over who? From the above list you've only got 2 NRL starting props under the age of 31 to select from.

I think he's definitely in a list of players who will likely play in the near future. AWS I'd probably have him as 6th or 7th choice, he only moves further up that list next year.

  12. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Yeah there are plenty of burgeoning players I didn't list. He belongs in the second list imo not the first.

  13. jazman84 JM Eightyfour

He'll play Origin within the next 2-3 years IMO.

  14. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Mm maybe. In 3 years he'll be 28 which would make him one of the oldest débutante props we've ever picked. He's been at the Broncos for quite a while now (almost 5 years) and didn't cement a FG spot until last year. I'm not saying he isn't good enough if his form holds and he progresses but it's just really rare for a front rower to get picked at that age. Price, Civoniceva, Webcke, Webb, Scott, Ross, McGuire, Myles, Lillyman, Gee, Thorn etc. practically every prop we've picked in the last 20+ years - they'd all played Origin before they were his current age let alone 28. (Shillington was 25 or 26 and Nutley got handed a one-off jersey at 31.)

He's not going to get picked if he's stuck behind 3 or 4 other blokes at club level.

  15. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

His best chance at origin could be the opposite to others, leaving Brisbane, and be a good starting prop.

  16. Magic AJ Parker

I think you're both missing the point, it's not so much about how good Jarrod Wallace is and more about how there's no one else.

  17. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Nah I get your point but we just disagree. We have three certain selections in Scott, McGuire and Napa (and Papalii will be in the side somewhere). Maybe in 2 or 3 years when Scott, Myles, Lillyman etc, are all retired but as I said to Jaz, Wallace, at this stage, is no more likely to be picked than Ofahengaue, Glasby, or Korbin Sims. He belongs in the latter group imo.

  18. Cribbage RG Cribb

He arguably belongs in the first list just because of your lack of depth in that position. Quality wise though yeah he's a second-lister.

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

I'm kind of glad you didn't put Ashley Taylor in your list. He's been okay this year -- knows when the take the line on and kicks well -- but the Fox Sports commentators are seeing something there that I'm not with their talk of him maybe challenging Hunt and Milford by the time Cronk and Thurston retire. Greg Bird does half his job for him FFS.

  20. Julian BJ Taylor

Agree so much with that Cribb.
