Bastian would surely only be a fairly short term (3 seasons is a decent amount of time) solution on the pitch. If you can get Bastian now on a 5 year contract with the idea he'll be a first XI player for 3 seasons or so and he can come in for the odd game after that and provide an incredibly experienced head when needed. Not only that, but you'd assume he'd be an absolutely incredible influence for other, younger players in the squad? Plus there is no reason they couldn't buy Bastian and Schneiderlin later on.

Yeah, there's the element of what he can do for the youngsters I suppose. I'd feel a bit funny if we signed him now, ignored Scheiderlin, then forked out £25m for him in 3 years anyway, seems poor planning and a waste of resources at first glance.

Whether Schweinsteiger would be a player who sits around for the last two years of a contract and be a reserve is another question, he'd either want one last challenge/payday in America/Saudi, or go back to Bayern and do that role (remember his older brother played exclusively for Bayern II doing just that for the last few years of his career)

I do kinda wonder about the influence on younger players. Considering we've had Giggs and Scholes until recently training with the squads, then both taking coaching roles last year (along with Butt and P Neville), there's not really been that many youngsters come through who you could say have been influenced by any of these... Cleverley is probably the only one who's made a Utd career who can prossibly cite Scholes, though its a poor example. Maybe Januzaj for Giggs, though I've not heard it said.....
Mind you, we did semi produce Pogba, and Morrison is a supremely talented dickcanoe

Yeah I do see your point about influencing youngsters. I was sort of thinking what you said as I typed it, but thought I'd go with it anyway. I guess it's not something anyone who hasn't been in those situations could properly comment on, as we don't know the influence they have. I just always assume it will be vast.

I'd tend to go with MS. I can't remember too many top-class players from other big leagues setting the Premiership alight at the end of their careers, unless I'm forgetting someone obvious?

He had a pretty stellar season last year too even without looking at these very impressive stats I found on the SSN website

It's also worth pointing out that Schweinsteiger isn't a regular at Bayern anymore. Ultimately our aim shouldn't just be about challenging Chelsea and the rest for the Premiership but also challenging Bayern and Barca and co for the Champions League. We won't do that by picking up fringe players. If you want someone to play a very solid role for 20-25 games a season then we have that covered with Michael Carrick. Schneiderlin will hopefully give us 6-8 years and improve in that period, something we won't get with BS.

The only position I'd argue we need experience over youth is at CB where we desperately lack a strong defensive leader.

I do have to admit not pursuing Clyne at £12-15 million is extremely frustrating. Unless he expressed a preference to sign for Liverpool I can't see the logic there at all given the lack of better alternatives on the market

    Ballack maybe?

  8. Uppercut CB Faldo

He's the only one I could think of. He played OK but think he has to go down as a failure because Chelsea were soooo much better before Abramovich insisted they started signing big names.

  9. Furball G Furball

Because he spent most of last season injured.

Lloris looking very likely now from what I have read...fuck .

  11. BoyBlunder BOY Blunder

Really ive been hearing alot about Cillison (sp?) but not much about Lloris lately

  12. Uppercut CB Faldo

This is almost as bad a sign though.

I'm not sure you'd be looking to him to set the league alight necessarily though. You need him to come in and do a very valuable but largely underrated job, I'd say. I must admit though, Blunder's point about not wanting to pick up fringe players is a good one. Raises the question about whether MS would even get on the bench at Bayern though, when considering not wanting to pick up fringe players.

Also, I'm sure I read that United were looking at a different rb, but for the life of me I can't remember who.

Seamus Coleman is probably who youre thinking of, ssn did an article about reported interest today. The dutch bloke who plays for psg and whos name escapes me is another wev been linked with. Both would be good signings.

  15. Uppercut CB Faldo

Van der Wiel. I'm pretty sure he's shite though.

  16. BoyBlunder BOY Blunder

Yeah im not sure either are much better than Clyne who was on the cheap. Frustrating

  17. Riddy JH Ridd

signing schneiderlin puts the Schweiny move to bed pretty much.

  18. cpr CP Raftery

Not sure why we haven't had a look at Clyne TBH, unless we don't want to poach too many Southampton players

  19. Uppercut CB Faldo

How good is Clyne? I have no idea at all. Reading through twitter I don't understand where so many United/Liverpool fans get their opinions on a Southampton right-back from.

Promising. What I would be most worried about is that he hasn't got much experience at all in big matches. His biggest flaw is probably that he gets caught too far forward at times against the stronger teams, so with the adrenaline pumping in a Champions League game or something like that he might be shown up. He hasn't been as good for Southampton as Luke Shaw was though.
