DWTA. It's a no brainer that attack is more important in EVERY sport.

Dumbest post I have ever read. The logic is so idiotic I can't believe it is being uttered by a human being.

Aren't the swans a heaps defensive orientated team?

Nice retort. Are you going to argue against common sense and sound logic somehow?

Your argument presupposes that scoring runs or points is more influenced by attack than defence. Where is the evidence for that? Your comment is like Laurie Daley saying that the team which scores the most points wins - that doesn't prove that the act of scoring points is more important than the act of stopping points being scored.

Maybe I'm misreading you. If you're talking about the value of attacking players with regard to how players are paid and revered then I agree attack is more important. Superstars are always the attackers. If, however, you're arguing that attack is more important in every sport with regard to winning matches then my above argument stands. It's absurd to say attack is more important because attackers score points and defenders don't. If you changed the scoring system in cricket to a point being awarded every time a bowler bowls a ball that doesn't go for more than 3 runs, by your standard that would make defence (bowling) more important. That's ridiculous.

I'm simply of the opinion that attack is more important in every sport.
Points are the aim of the game. Score the most points you win. I have already made the argument that people signing the cheques are prepared to pay a lot more for a good attacking player than a defender. Spectators and fans also get a lot more pleasure out of seeing great tries/goals scored than tackles made. Stopping points being scored is the less glamorous aspect and not as important imo.

I am sure you will argue against that and say it's absurb or the 2nd dumbest post every made by a human being blah blah blah now but it's just my opinion....(which is always right)

Man I can't wait to watch Michael Luck and Simon Mannering play again. Hope they make 500 tackles.

And that Ryan Nelson...what a showman! Would give my right nut for tickets to see him play!

Sport is entertainment after all and these guys are the great entertainers.

I'd happily sit through a less pleasurable game if the end result was success (and pride in my team)

Did you even read what I wrote? I asked if you're talking about importance in the context of attraction to the game, money and etc. Or whether you're simply talking about winning a match.

Saying points are the aim of the game as if that proves attack is more important than defence is moronic.

Concede fewer points and you also win. It's far too simplistic to say "oh points are the name of the game, attack is more important."

As a complete outsider to AFL, I'm going to throw my opinion in that offence is more important than defence purely because the size of the field and the ease of scoring compared to other football codes should in theory limit how effective a defence can be.

At AFL level there's enough good footy brains around in coaching and enough talent in the player pools for 6-7 teams to have a potentially premiership winning game plan for their squad. The key is to get your players believing that game plan, whether it be offensively minded or defensively minded. If there's doubt in the minds of key players that the plan you put forward as coach isn't the best one available for your squad, you've already lost.

That belief breeds dedication to all facets of the game (second efforts, 1% etc etc) and mental toughness to never throw a game away and know that sticking to the plan will eventually reap rewards.

I know it sounds like it could be applied to any sport and is a bit of a cop out, but I think it applies to AFL more than any other sport given the nature of the game and the frequency of scoring opportunities.

    Sincerely,

Fiery is like most watchers of sport; a simple man who for some reason is unable to separate enjoyment from analysis.

You can try and overanalysise if you want but to me sport = entertainment. Entertainment is the most important factor. Importance being the subject title.

would have thought winning was the most important factor

though having said that, while I cant say I know a lot about afl, in a lot of sports they do say the best form of defence is offence....

    im just saying.....

Of course I do. I follow rugby mainly and my team usually wins. Especially if we're playing the Wallabies.
