A continuation of Skippos vs Mousey.

In my opinion, the key to winning a match is having your back 6 play well. If they aren't good enough, then you're going to lose. Defensive minded mids are also key. If your mids are too attacking, you're going to have a bad time.

    Discuss.

It was more the defensive minded mids bit. In 5 years on afl forums I've never once read people classifying midfielders as part of defense due to their defensive mindedness until I posted it last night :p

I actually think compared to sports like rugby league & union AFL is an incredibly attack centric game.

An afl team with shit defense won't win a flag. One with shit attack still might.

    Typo somewhere or massive contradiction?

No because the second statement is relevant to league even more from what I've seen.

Needs to be serious consideration put to moving all AFL related discussion to the Victard subbie and banning it on the main boards.

Haha yeah I was going to say that and point to the St George Illawarra premiership winning side.

Just seems like a weird set of statements to make both in the same post tbh.

Droos, I thank you for using your supreme AFL knowledge and voting with attack!

Like, the whole thing in league is 'defend' - in AFL, it's defence with a mind to attack.

I've not seen enough league to analyse the game so call me on it but I don't think every tackle and defensive play in league is with the attempt of attacking, it's with the attempt to stop someone elses attack.

In AFL defence is almost the best form of attack, you don't just 'tackle' - you choose one of many courses of action in order to maximise your chance of getting the ball and territory. You don't just 'spoil' - you punch the ball to maximise the chance of a teammate getting the ball and launching an attack.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that under league principles, in a marking contest the defender would just punch the ball forward. In afl, they'd consider punching sideways as a team mate might be roving. Excellent defense is attacking.

And that's not running down league; the defensive principles are purely by virtue of the game and rules.
