The effort is impressive and that what the Broncos have been lacking, so I'll take it as an impressive win. There ill displine is a worry though they seem to link multiple penlities back to back
Gillett wins CH9 MOTM. He was pretty damn good. Lucky for him the opposition ran straight at him, so all he had to do was tackle, not make bad decisions.
The multiple penalties thing happens every season in the opening rounds. You're right though, it was good to win a game on defence.
Really, really poor from St George. That's the sort of game that will leave the coach in despair over the season ahead. You're not going to watch that game and think there are little things to work on to improve the team, or that you need to change the attitude of the side, or work on a certain area .. you're just going to watch the game and realise the side you've got isn't good enough. Everything went right for them and they lost. I don't agree with those who say Fien is a out of position or not a first grade standard halfback - I mean for a little period he was even a pretty decent Test halfback ffs - but I will say that their spine as it is really isn't going to work. Fien and Soward do not compliment each other at all; it's a poor man's Pearce/Maloney.
I thought he actually warmed to the task and didn't play too badly tonight. He didn't organise the side particularly well though.
I don't think St George's spine clearly not being a good fit as it really means you have to dump Fien from halfback necessarily, as controversial as that may sound. I think it would probably be easier to find someone with a bit of creativity and vision to partner Fien than it would be to find someone who compliments Soward at it stands. Soward as he is at the moment is a bit of a luxury player and it might be a luxury St George can't afford. I certainly think Fien played better than Soward tonight for example. Maybe they should give Soward a run at fullback.
No I agree. You can play Fien alongside Marshall. But not Soward. Neither are creative players. This is why I ranked St. George at 15 pre-season because it was plain to me that they wouldn't be able to score enough points to win matches. Tonight proved that conclusively. Unfortunately, there's no other place to play Soward, and there's really no other player with whom you can replace him currently at the Dragons. And even if there was, it would never happen. Likewise moving Fien isn't the answer when you've got Rein and no real other quality halfback option. Alas, I think the Dragons are doomed this year. A stellar forward pack will keep them relatively competitive but they're bottom four IMO.
Yeah, I agree. EDIT: I think I tipped them fifth last rather than bottom four actually but yeah, they're not making the eight.
