Criticisim of Di Canio - Justified?

Discussion in 'Association Football Discussion' started by Baxter, Apr 4, 2013.

Di Canio's been in and around English football for a while now and his political views have long been public. So is the recent reaction to his appointment as manager of Sunderland justified?

  2. Arheiner SIA Yates

Well if he didn't want to be hated, maybe he should think about what he says publicly.

  3. Alec AD Funkotron

I think Di Caprio is a good actor, don't know who still criticises him.

  4. Julian BJ Taylor

I've heard billy Zane's still no fan.

  5. Frizzed WC Welker

I'm actually a fan of Di Canio.

Wouldn't have gotten the Sunderland job if it wasn't for his name. One promotion to league 1 and now a massive jump to a Premiership club? Can see it back firing

thrown in the deep end for sure.

He had Swindon playing good football and it's been a while since SUnderland fans have seen any of that, so I can see him doing reasonably well.

It's a bit of a double standard that his views weren't an issue until he landed a 'big' job, but that's pretty much standard for the English game these days.

I don't really buy into this. It's not unbelievable for ex-players to be fastlaned early due to their superior experience in the upper echelons of the game, and he's proven that he is a good manager.

It's a risk, certainly, but it's not like it's unheard of, nor like it's premier league suicide.

  10. mouse MJ Edwards

Proven? By getting a league two club promoted.

As in, he has proven managerial ability. I'm not saying he's proven himself at the top flight, just that he has proven he is capable of being a professional manager.

He did have good backing as well. But as I've said elsewhere, he did have them playing good football, so I can see him getting the players to perform. It's more in the summer that I'd be judging him.

The whole defence and backtracking really gets me. I'm reasonably okay with a fascist being a coach of a club (not relevant to the job at hand etc) but the man has a tribute to Mussolini tattooed on him. Absolute cunt.

  14. Cevno IV Narang

Nobody would have known about his belief's and support for fascism and given a damn if he hadn't made those statements and done those salutes during his playing days or gotten a Tattoo of Mussolini.

He blurred the line between the 2, and now having used his public exposure to do those things he can't just use the "I am just a football manager" excuse.

  15. Cevno IV Narang

Anyway's he made that statement yesterday denying to be a fascist completely, probably under pressure after initial twisted statements trying to explaing what he had said and done earlier which was so badly handled by Sunderland.

Might not go well with his fans back at Lazio and Italy though. Wonder when we see him downplay this statement over there, as it sure did take time for him to say this.

  16. Cevno IV Narang

Yeah, he probably wouldn't but then Ex-players get generally better jobs in management straight away compared to less high profile players or non-players. Roy Keane for example at Sunderland itself.

Didn't Swindon's sponsor pull out when he was appointed? There were some protests from supporters group as well from what i've read but obv the media attention would be less.

Also, he was investigated for alleged Racial abuse to a player, and Swindon initially issued a apology to the player. Think this Time Miliband resigning and other prominent supporters protesting also gave this issue more momentum.

Listen Cevno, as evil as Di Canio may or may not be, Swindle are worse

I need to find a gif of Andy Goram scudding Di Canio in the back of the head twice with the ball in the 1997 New Year game.

He's proved he's a good manager? For League 1, yes. For premiership? He's proven nothing for that standard.

    Very poor appointment, imo.

Based on this logic, you could say exactly the same about people like Ronnie Moore, who would never ever have been considered for a job like this.
