    It's to maintain cohesion.. both Walker and Maloney play on the left and Walker won. Maloney is probably better on either side compared to Cleary but it's not his usual game so that's the logic behind it. Plus Maloney can be a bit of a dunce sometimes with his kicking game, Cleary can be a bit more stable there (and he was going to pick reynolds there first which is similar logic) whilst I daresay they will attack heavily on the left with Walker/Mitchell.

    Walker's great on either sides of the ruck. That's a bullshit reason if it was their logic.

    I can really see Cleary having a similar series to last year. Doesn't choke or anything like Pearce, but just doesn't do anything of note either and maybe goes MIA. Maloney steered them through some very high pressure and critical moments in last year's series. Ridiculous to leave out a bloke who has had so many quality games for NSW. He's the only NSW player available who has consistently created tries and line breaks in Origin (apart from Farah who is washed up).

    I struggle a bit with this topic because deep down I've just never rated Maloney. If it was any other player I'd entirely agree with MF, but part of me can't shake the idea that everything he's done so far has been to some extent one giant fluke and he's now reverting to the mean. Which is retarded I know, but that's why it's only part of me that thinks that.

    I think a number of things counted against him in a shoot-out with Cleary.

    1. He's a 6, Cleary's a 7. When Keary wasn't injured and it looked like he was a lock to be selected, Brandy talked about Reynolds, Cleary and Townsend as potentially halfbacks - not Keary himself and not Walker. So it seems like they were really buying into the difference between the two positions. I think this was extremely retarded when Keary was going to play given what he's done at 7 when Cronk has been out, but I think it was a factor, and even moreso when the other half was going to be Walker who really is a genuine 6.
    2. He plays left side, as Toolman said.
    3. He's actually been far more pus than Cleary this season, especially given what their respective roles in the team actually are.
    4. He's getting older now, so there are fears he might be washed up as a player.
    5. Cleary had apparently (I didn't watch it, was at a conference) the best game either of them have had all season this week in a game Maloney wasn't involved in.

    The fact that Maloney has actually been (surprisingly to me) pretty good for NSW while Cleary was "not shit" at best really should've trumped all that given Cleary wasn't exactly pulling up trees, but as someone who just wants to see NSW win I'm happy with the selection because my lizard brain refuses to rate Maloney.

    :laugh: I'm exactly the same. I really struggle to rate him (although I do acknowledge he outplayed Cleary last year in Origin). Also, his defence is just so bad that I feel like it'll could cost NSW a try at any point out of the blue, no matter the game situation.

    In regards to Cleary's game last week, he was decent in what was an otherwise absolute cripple fight. He definitely still struggled to control the game, but a lot of that was due to his shit cunt team just dropping the ball all the time. In the last 15 minutes he managed to put the game to bed pretty well, which they've definitely struggled to do other times this season.

    Yeah nah I think they’ve fucked up. In the current climate, actually make that the climate in which NSW haven’t had a reliable half in 15 years, the bloke who produces as Maloney has, should almost be beyond reproach imo, given the other options.
