Did you just use the Dally M awards to justify his selection in the Test side? And, "almost won Dally M player of the year"? He didn't finish in the top 10 ffs.

I didn't say his club form shouldn't be taken into consideration. Merely that it should be secondary. After all, we're not picking a club side. We're picking a representative side so it only makes sense to place higher importance on performances most analogous to that, which are obviously his past rep performances for Australia and NSW.

I could go into a detailed analysis of why I think Glenn Stewart's attack-based game is not suited to what Australia need given we already have a ball-playing backrower in Bird but it's rather incidental IMO.

What was so good about it?

Parker won some shit magazine's player of the year.

Johnson is really no chance to play for Australia again so there really isn't any reason to argue his case unless you really want to upset yourself.

There really is only 4 or so players who will get the gig, and 3 of them only have a chance if Gallen is played at prop.

    Gallen
    Parker
    Bird
    Stewart

He finished on 18 points after losing 9 for the suspension which would have had him in 2nd position with 2 rounds remaining. The point being that he was consistently one of the best players this season and IMO deserving of a Test spot if Gallen is not picked at lock.
His previous rep form was good enough if selection is to be based on that (which it shouldn't be)
You don't need to provide a detailed analysis as to why you think Bird should be selected above him because that wouldn't change my opinion.

And my point is, club form is incidental when picking a Test side and using Dally M points is absurd. I mean is Matty Bowen deserving of a Test jersey because of where he finished?

Nah it really isn't. Compared to Bird's it's garbage.

But you're right, I mean why pick a rep team based on past rep performances. Makes so much more sense to pick one based on 8 weeks of club footy.

No shit, because you're a Manly supporter.

  11. Magic AJ Parker

That in a beaten forward pack he looked like creating something nearly every time. Was our best forward after Gallen, 39 tackles to boot

How was he better than Bird?

    Here are Glenn Stewart's touches.

6.10 - Simple hit-up from his own end.
29.00 - Simple hit-up two passes wide from his own end.
38.50 - No look, flick pass offload on 2nd tackle from his own 20m line which is knocked up in the air by QLD and luckily regained by Minichiello. Only good fortune stopped QLD from getting yet another set in NSW's 20m zone with 90 seconds before HT. Idiotic play.
39.19 - Catch and pass out the back to Minichiello. Gasnier as decoy.
39.37 - Receives Gidley offload, just hits it up after running across field.
41.05 - Starts on a straight hit-up but then veers across field, gets a good ball away to Lewis and out to Morris for a good gain.
48.18 - Cuts back in on an angle from Soward. Hits the line and then runs sideways and backwards and is tackled.
54.14 - Picks up loose ball from a Thurston error and is quickly set upon and tackled.
55.25 - Again runs and inside line off Soward and is well tackled down low by Cronk.
    55.55 - Makes a good 15m run.
    73.33 - Simple hit-up from a tap.
74.10 - Tries to beat Inglis on the outside but is tackled.
77.08 - Cleans up a Lockyer kick on his own goal line.
79.29 - Takes a hit-up and once again runs sideways before being tackled.

What on earth is so special about that performance? How was it any better than Watmough's?

Bird's single piece of footwork to beat Hodges and send Morris away was better than anything Stewart did. And if I went through the whole match there'd be little doubt who the better attacker was and is. Bird ran straighter, harder and still produced better ball work than Stewart.

Yeah and Bird made 37, plus more metres from fewer runs, and did it with 26 minutes less playing time.

  14. Magic AJ Parker

Watmough was average, he got credited quite a few metres for his linebreak but got smashed all game and I'm one of his biggest fans. I thought Bird was largely impotent but still pretty good, had him about the same as Stewart. Not sure why it really matters though I still rate his game as better than decent even if Bird or any other forward was slightly better than him.

Never really been a big fan of Stewart but credit where credit's due, he's been killing it this season and I don't think Parker's a better option than him.

If Gallen can play prop, so can Parker. :ninja:

Did he win RLW player of the year? Awesome

I agree, TBH. Wouldn't be as good as Gallen at it, but he would still do well.

    What about Tim Grant? :troll:

Turns out he gets a call-up for Gillard's team anyway.

Penrith panther's prop Tim Grant rewarded with a represenative call-up after stellar season with the mountain men

PENRITH prop Tim Grant has been called into the Prime Minister's XIII side to face Papua New Guinea, following the withdrawal of Kade Snowden.
Newcastle-bound front-rower Snowden battled a back injury for the second half of the season with Cronulla, and may require further off-season surgery before he begins with the Knights.

Grant is considered one of the best up-and-coming front-rowers in the game, after another solid season for the Panthers which also propelled him into the City Origin team this year.

The PM's XIII squad will make their way to Cairns on Thursday, before heading to PNG the next day for the September 25 match in Lae.

While captain Nathan Hindmarsh has ruled out going on the Four Nations tour, the Parramatta second-rower said the fixture offered final chance for some of his teammates to force themselves into the Kangaroos squad.

"They've used it as a selection trial before and I think it's just another way to keep them fit if there's players in that side," Hindmarsh said.

Prime Minister's XIII: Matt Bowen, Blake Ferguson, Michael Jennings, Josh Morris, Nathan Merritt, Greg Bird, Mitchell Pearce, David Shillington, Jake Friend, Tim Mannah, Michael Crocker, Nathan Hindmarsh (c), Nate Myles, Chris McQueen, Tim Grant, Luke Douglas, Ben Barba, Preston Campbell
