Why Hook Should Never Coach Again

I would have known if he did it that early tbh, I can believe he did it a few weeks out from the season's close.

The thing is though, the fact that Prince announced his exit prior to the season even finishing paints Griffin as an even bigger spastic, as it gave him more time to cover the spot.

Cover him with who though? Were there many NRL-standard halfbacks floating around without a contract at the end of 2013?

No, but you don't have to be NRL standard to be better than Brisbane's options. I bet he could've persuaded one of the thousand Australian halves plying their trade in England to come back to the NRL, or failing that just signed upon one of the top halves from the NSW Cup or Queensland Cup.

If he did that and they failed, then oh well, Prince fucked him over. But I think everyone could see at the start of the season that Hoffman would be a terrible option, and relying on Kahu to be fit (and, tbh, any good even if he was fit) was almost as big a mistake as the selection of his replacement.

But it is not a matter of 'if' they failed, you know they would have failed. The best unattached halves in reserve grade or playing in SL are there because they are proven failures in the NRL. Even if Griffin had gone out and head-hunted Joel Romelo or begged Smith, or Gale, or Burns to come back, the result would have been at best, only slightly less disastrous than Hoffman.

From what I can gather, the Broncos were in a bit of a bind and the real issue wasn't Griffin's lack of recruitment in the off-season but his bizarre decision that Hoffman was the better make-shit half than Barba.

  6. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah but they would have failed much less than Hoffman. If he picked his grandmother at five-eighth I doubt you'd be defending it with 'oh well, no other first grade standard halves on the market!' and that's pretty much how I view the Hoffman thing. They don't have to be first grade standard to be better than what you've got; he should have gone out and signed a shit half. They keep Wallace or sign Michael Witt and they're a top 4 side.

Barba can't play two positions though. Playing Hoffman at fullback still would've a terrible decision.

My point is that the NRL isn't pass/fail. Having someone score 49 rather than 12 in a key position can make you a much better team.

I agree with the thrust of your argument on this occasion but that's hyperbole.

  9. Magic AJ Parker

JT, well that's if they they didn't rule out making a play for him because of his age. :surrender:

I never understood that fiasco. They don't want Thurston because of age but they're keen on Smith. Um, what?

  11. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I really think the Broncos would've got Thurston too.

Playing Hoffman at fullback would have been fine as a decision. Certainly not the ideal scenario but it would have been one of the better ways of handling the situation.

This. You can't tell me there wasn't a half running around in one of our feeder clubs that wouldn't have been a better option.

What players floating around the system would you have preferred to see? Career reserve graders like Matt Seamark or Todd Murphy? Or incredibly green juniors like Cameron Cullen or Ash Taylor?

They all seem like garbage options and I really don't regard them as an improvement.

    Brad Davis dead yet?

  16. Old Mate M Perry

I don't agree with your Macca and Wallace policies.

  17. Jazz NC Smith

I'm sure he retired at the start of 2013.

No idea, but if there wasn't someone floating around in reserves that wouldn't have been a better option than a winger who thinks he's a fullback but is playing 5/8, then that's fucked up.

Fair enough comment really .......Zac Strasser was another one who was most likely at beginning of the season. I heard his form in QCup never demanded selection though.

Whilst it's easy to say anyone would have done better than Hoffman, the reality is often far different.

Probably Griffins persistence with Hoffman before swapping him with Barba stands likely for the most criticism.

Nah. Better options had to be explored. I think Griffin thought they were certainties to get Milford for this year and that's why Prince was pushed on and Wallace let go. Once that fell through though, he had to go out and find someone. Most clubs will release players if they are reserve graders that have the opportunity to go play first grade.
