Southern Kings to make their debut.

Anyone see Folau play yesterday? You can't back off in defence when the other guy is running at the try line. He is completely lost at fullback. Has no idea about the positional play.

I have to say the Kings defence has looked weak so far.

    Sergeal Peterson you beauty!

    Eastern Province eh.

I wonder how long it'll take for people to accept the team. Honestly, I was uncertain about them when I first heard the news but I've really grown to be keen on the whole venture. PE went haywire - they've really been kept out of the loop wrt super rugby. I honestly reckon the best thing to do for the sake of the fans would be to reform the Cats - combine the Cheetahs and Lions. Of course the rivalry would make it a bit hard at first but for the sake of the fans throughout the nation it shares the game out evenly.

Yeah be interesting. Obviously some politics will get in the way still. :(

  11. MrPrez CM Dyer

Out of interest, are you for or against the change?

  12. Magrat Garlick M Garlick

Torn. The Lions were good value, but ended up not producing much in the way of results. And PE deserves a squad.

Think your Cats solution might be good, but dunno what they think of that in Jo'burg and Bloemfontein.

Yep. I'm pretty much of exactly the same opinion as you. I really reckon the Eastern Cape (:p) deserve a team - it's really quite strange having a torn province during superrugby matches as they've all adopted random other teams as their own. That said, there are heaps of Lions fans missing out now. Someone is going to have to sacrifice here, and it has been the Lions. It gives a wider spread of superrugby throughout the nation though which is a good thing, in particular for the Currie Cup as teams like Border and EP can retain their schoolboy stars and therefore be genuinely competitive.

Probably my biggest beef with super rugby (or pro 12), all this. The almighty board deciding which club is or isn't worthy just leaves a bad taste.

Yeah, true, but there's hardly a way of going around that given the nature of the tournament. It's a great concept I feel, and the difficulties like the one mentioned get overshadowed by the general appeal of the tournament.

Stuck in pre-1994 times, me. :p The cricket team was called Eastern Province, wasn't it? And also the Currie Cup team?

The best would perhaps be a Super 16/18, but not enough depth in SA or Australia for that...5 teams already stretching those countries badly. And it would probably need an NFL-style fixture list with not every team playing all others even once, with all the inherent unfairness.

That said, I think it's a much better pro structure than what the Northern Hemisphere have set up.

Not really another location in NZ where we could run a team tbh too, we've only got 6 'Cities' with 100k+ people, and 5 of them already host teams. Maybe got the depth though, but probably would have to run a 2nd team out of Auckland.

The EP Kings is a Currie-Cup team, but the superrugby-playing Kings are called the Southern Kings for a reason - it includes Border, Eastern Province and South-Western Districts. So essentially the Kings that were playing in the Currie Cup are just a part of the Kings that play superrugby - kind of like what happened when the Lions and Cheetahs used to have separate Currie Cup teams but played superrugby under the Cats name.

And yeah, the format is infinitely better than anything the Northern Hemisphere has. It has so many levels of supporter satisfaction - supporting your own team comes first, but then there's the deciding whether to support another South African team against their Aussie/NZ counterparts or whether the local hatred should extend to all matches they play.

Currie cup must be the most storied provincial comp in the world.

Ranfurly shield ain't bad I guess.

My hidden goal this year is to make 50 anti hurricane's posts to wind up Rego by the end of the season. Just kidding Rego.

But on a serious note TJ Perenara was patchy last night. Started off playing like a loose forward by taking the ball into contact himself and then finally decided he was a number 9 at about the 20 minute mark and played well after that.
