A great early opportunity goes begging for the Spartans. Paddy Orr is tackled by Mike Martyn only 10m from the Vikings line, and despite there being ample support in the form of Eggman and Davis, Orr is unable to free the ball and is somewhat dubiously penalised for not releasing.

It's been all Spartans so far, and so far the Vikings defence have held firm. Bobby Blunder is released on one of his characteristic runs by John McGrath, but is tackled about 12m out. Mike Martyn is penalised for being offside at the resulting ruck.

That's a penalty. The Spartans want something on the scoreboard for their endeavours and Luffman steps up and takes the 3 points.

Luffman wants another 3 points, but gets a terrible connection. The ball comes up just short of the posts and Aaron Hunt collects and deposits it in the stands about 20m up field.

Oh dear oh dear. A golden try scoring opportunity is missed for the Spartans. Alan Izett had done some great work rumbling up to the try line following a good run from Blunder. The Spartans just needed a clean pick and go, but Michael Chung fumbled the ball at the back of the ruck and the ref called it knock on. That really shouldn't happen in these conditions. Spartans trying their best to keep the Vikings in this.
