Ha. Cant see Gillett knocking back Dragons, Titans, Sharks and Manly only to sign with Warriors.

  2. Paddy P Orr

Can't say I blame him wanting to leave mediocrity to return to the Cowboys who are now an actual premiership threat unlike when left. Would be nice to have Lillyman since Tamou's off.

You can also guarantee your rep prospects decline as soon as you head to a club like the Warriors.

  4. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Yeah Lillyman at a good price would be great. Tamou is vastly overpriced.

  5. Old Mate M Perry

Hardly sounds like he is a sure thing does it?

  6. Fiery GR Smith

Yeah it really destroyed the rep careers of guys like Jacob Lillyman, Kevin Campion and Steve Price eh? (But that was guaranteed)

Never said it was a sure thing. I'm optimistic though. He seems very keen on the idea. Can't wait to hear you, Boobidy and jazman84 blubbing about it from 15,000km away it if he does ;)

I suppose it's easier to argue with views you make up rather than the ones people actually post. But whatevs.

  10. Fiery GR Smith

    That made no sense.

I didn't say it destroys rep careers. I said your prospects of playing rep football decline. The first is just a straw man.

  12. Fiery GR Smith

The first straw man was made by you. Why are you even making the argument then? It doesn't apply to Matt Gillett. PJ Marsh and Campion were selected for their first SoO games while at the Warriors.

But if he did move to the Warriors and played well enough he would still be selected for rep teams. Just like Lillyman and Steve Price.

So who are these players whose rep prospects declined after moving to the Warriors then? Give me some examples.

Can't see how any of those clubs are more attractive tbh

That's not a straw man but anyways.

Yeah he'd probably still be picked. No one is arguing otherwise. Sufficiently good players will get picked no matter who they play for. I'm arguing - 1.Playing well at the Warriors is harder, generally, because they're an inferior club to, say, Brisbane. Which leads us to - 2.It's well known teams who do well contribute more rep players, and teams who do poorly produce less. (Part of it is cyclic i.e. they do well because they have more rep players/they have more rep players because they do well.) It's harder to get picked from a shit team than a good one and most of the time, the Warriors are shit. Doesn't mean you can't be but touch-and-go selections can be affected.

Incidentally, the 15 year old examples you cite - Campion debuted for QLD in 97 so that claim is false. Marsh did but again, 15 years ago when they were actually good.

Dane Nielsen is a good example. Played 3 matches for QLD whilst at the Storm. Went to NZ and turned to absolute shit. Never heard from again.

Ryan Hoffman played Origin last year (was dropped this year) but hasn't played for Australia since leaving Melbourne and will probably never play rep footy again. That also has to do partly with age I suppose but playing for a horrible Warriors side instead of a premiership threat like Melbourne certainly wouldn't have helped.

And then you can point to players who broke into rep footy as soon as they left NZ, like James Maloney.

The fact is it's just harder for Australian rep players to get picked playing for a team made up largely from non-Australian's, and who aren't very successful.

Fuckin hell. I didn't ask for a 1500 word essay.

I don't really buy the argument it's harder to play well at an "inferior" club. Players can still shine brightly in losing outfits.

Dane Nielsen is, was and always has been a shit player. Even when he was at Melbourne. How the fuck he ever played for Queensland is beyond me.

Ever thought that maybe, just maybe, the Warriors might have developed Maloney into being a decent player?

Stand corrected re Campion. (Although that wasn't SoO)

I don't give a fuck what you asked for. If it's too verbose, dont read it. I couldn't possibly give less of a fuck.

Yes, some players can shine in poor outfits. In general though I don't think you'll find most players perform better with inferior players around them and in a club that rarely offers you the chance to play important matches like prelims, semis, GF's etc.

Whatever you think of Nielsen as a player is irrelevant to the argument so that doesn't require a response. If anything, his being an ordinary player who made a rep team whilst at Melbourne adds weight to my argument.

Yeah it's quite possible that the Warriors played a role in developing Maloney into a quality player. But the fact is it wasn't until he moved to Sydney and played alongside the NSW halfback that he broke into rep footy. We're not arguing if the Warriors can develop players. We know they can. We're talking about the advantage of playing in well-structured, successful clubs who provide lots of rep players.

Tetchy lol. Just be thankful I did actually read it.

Chad Townsend is another Aussie we developed into a really good player.

    (Keep your reply brief please)

And a player whose recently had his name provisionally raised in prospective rep discussions because he's at the Sharks, among other reasons. A successful team, and alongside several incumbent Blues players, especially the current Blues five-eighth whom he partners. There's no way he'd be more likely to wear a Blues jersey if he'd stayed at the Warriors, if he'd played exactly the same there. And there's a fair chance he wouldn't have been able to perform as well if he'd been in an underperforming Warriors side this year.

You should probably be thankful that anyone on here even gives you the time of day tbh.

  20. Fiery GR Smith

    And you can "guarantee" that?
