I really can't see any reason whatsoever to put a new 35k stadium at Penrith. I reckon Penrith park is a pretty solid venue as is, should just pump a few $$ into a new stand at one end. 22.5k capacity as is.

So Nth Qld are expected to be getting a new 30k rectangular roofed stadium by 2017.

Canbbera's new 45k stadium is going to be reduced to a max. capacity of 30k, again it'll be a roofed rectangular stadium to be completed by 2020.

And $500m (about $100m more than what the two stadiums above combined will cost) will be pumped into the SFS, SCG & Olympic Park. Both the SFS & ANZ will get a roof over them but a lot of the money will be put into making Moore Park a more attractive venue as a whole (bars & restaurants etc.)

- Parramatta will get a $29m upgrade (still pushing for more cash as that's only going to increase their capacity by 3k which isn't close to enough)
- Leichhardt wont be getting any funding - could be the beginning of the end
- Still no confirmation on where the new rectangular tier 2 stadium will be built in the west but the sports minister has confirmed it's still a big part of their stadium strategy.

Brookvale should be used for manlys interstate and lower profile matches where the smaller crowds fit play their big games accross the harbour at the upgraded SFS

I think a few teams in Sydney should be more creative using venues tbh

For the Fury if they come back. Never rains in the winter, and it obviously isn't Cairns, but we still get a genuine wet season January through March.

In Manly. They just need t get the NRL & whatever government support they can to bite the bullet and build them a new stadium at a new location. There's just so much wrong with Brookie that they're going to need this type of funding every 5 years just to stay relevant.

They have some pretty powerful corporate support behind their club too, time to get those blokes to reach into their pockets and muster up whatever change they can find.

The Europeans have shown you can build 25k all seater stadiums for as low as 100-150m.

It's hard to compare construction costs in different countries due to different building regulations etc. I do agree with the sentiment though.

So good to have a CEO who knows what he's doing in regards to a stadium strategy. Olympic Park obviously doesn't need to be abandoned but we need to move away from it being the premier stadium in Sydney for Rugby League.

Exclusive: NRL chief Dave Smith’s plan to crash tackle ANZ Stadium and build bigger Allianz arena

THE NRL is lobbying Premier Mike Baird to build a new 65,000-seat Allianz Stadium at Moore Park, making it Sydney’s pre-eminent sports arena instead of Sydney Olympic Park’s ANZ.

The word is that NRL chief Dave Smith is also urging the government to consider building a new 40,000-seat, fully-roofed stadium at Parramatta.

These moves would spell the death knell for the former Olympic stadium, which is hoping the government will fund about $250 million of its $350 million redevelopment plan released this week.

In a sign the NRL will be a serious player in Sydney’s stadium battle, a well-placed source has revealed that Smith is giving the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust $750,000 to fund half of a new “concept design evaluation” for Allianz.

Work on the study has apparently already begun, assessing two options: refurbishing the existing Allianz stadium with between 45,000 and 55,000 seats or demolishing it and building a new 65,000-seat facility.

Smith has told NRL club officials the government should take a 50-year view when deciding how to invest hundreds of millions of dollars modernising Sydney’s out-of-date stadiums.

“It’s really a once in a lifetime opportunity and he wants to make sure Sydney gets it right,’’ one source said.

Smith is believed to have advised the Premier the government should consider Sydney’s sporting infrastructure as a “network of stadiums” and avoid “putting lipstick on pigs”.

He has been telling sports powerbrokers that the most successful football stadiums are purpose-built, rectangular arenas; located near existing commercial hubs; and well-serviced by transport, preferably heavy rail.

If you were starting from scratch, Smith argues, the biggest stadium would be located as close as possible to the CBD, like Melbourne’s sporting precinct, with a mid-tier stadium in Sydney’s mid-west and a third venue built further west once the Western Sydney airport project is well underway.

While he believes ANZ CEO Daryl Kerry has delivered the best redevelopment plan possible, he believes ANZ lacks atmosphere, with spectators too far away from the sidelines.

Sport Minister Stuart Ayres has also been in close contact for Smith over the past six months.

One source said the NRL has compared ANZ to Suncorp Stadium and found the worst seat in Brisbane is 45 metres closer to the action than at Homebush.

The NRL declined to comment yesterday its views are important as Sydney’s NRL teams are the biggest stadium tenants.

The leaders of ANZ’s two main tenants, the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ Shane Richardson and Canterbury Bulldogs’ Raelene Castle spokes enthusiastically about ANZ’s redevelopment plan this week. Under the plan, sports fans would be able to sit within 5 metres of the action at each end of the ground. The stadium would also be surrounded by a dynamic entertainment zone filled with bars, cafes and restaurants.

The NRL is responsible for staging roughly 100 premiership games in Sydney a year. At the moment, about 20 games are being played at Allianz, 30 games at ANZ and the other 50 in smaller venues.

Smith may make the point that the NRL would be able to convince clubs to play many more games in two main stadiums if it was confident fans would embrace “the game-day experience”.

ANZ is privately owned. Let the owners upgrade it if they want it. Stop looking for government handouts when they have already had about 3 upgrades over the past 10 years.

SFS is ripe for an upgrade.
Parra Stadium desperately needs it.

It just seems that those in charge of ANZ have heard that the gov are interested in upgrading stadiums and just thought "Hey, let's swoop in here and take it. We don't need it, but we'll find a good way to waste it."

MY BACK is sore. Not old age this time. I’ve been patting myself there a lot since*"The Telegraph"*reported ANZ Stadium had joined the growing queue of venues seeking government funds for redevelopment.
When I first started banging on about Sydney’s substandard sports venues a decade ago, I was staggered by the “can’t do” attitude.
Administrators, participants, media and fans all had a reason why a city with one of the most competitive football markets on the planet should continue to play its games in stadiums that were outdated, unsuitably configured or ramshackle.

The rationalists insisted Sydney’s geography meant a centralised stadium policy would fail and, besides, there was no money for new stadia — never mind the AFL had squeezed hundreds of millions from federal, state and local governments.
Meanwhile, sentimentalists choked back tears while calling for the retention of dilapidated suburban grounds they — like the vast majority — rarely attended. Certainly not with their families.ANZ Stadium has an ambitious plan for redevelopment.

But Sydney’s sporting community has gained some self-esteem. It finally considers itself worthy of the type of modern stadiums that will attract crowds and accommodate them in the comfort those in Melbourne and Brisbane — and even Adelaide! — take for granted.
Now the important part. Ensuring government interest incited partly by the rise of the Western Sydney Wanderers and the NRL’s improved lobbying is not squandered.
And, remember, that has happened before. Allowing the AFL to hijack the development of the Olympic stadium and create a venue that does not cater adequately for the week-to-week demands of the NFL is a stain on Sydney’s sporting history.
So how do we ensure the next great opportunity to rebuild Sydney’s sporting landscape is not wasted?
Stadium Group Australia wants $250 million in taxpayer funds for a $350 million redevelopment of ANZ Stadium. They shouldn’t get $2.50 unless they can guarantee they are not just putting lipstick on a pig.
That means proving that a redeveloped ANZ Stadium would provide a far more intimate atmosphere for NRL — and, potentially, A-League and Super Rugby — games with crowds of between 20,000 and 35,000; and that it would not just continue to be a fitting stage for special events watched by sold out crowds such as the NRL grand final, Bledisloe Cup and World Cup qualifiers.An artist’s impression of the potential ANZ Stadium revamp.

If that means a reconfiguration that would exclude the Swans who are no longer filling the venue for their occasional home and away games and finals, so be it.
I doubt you would get much complaint from their inner-eastern and lower north-shore supporters who are relishing the comfort of the expanded and refurbished SCG.
But if there is no guarantee ANZ Stadium would be a substantially more atmospheric and attractive venue for club football, all eyes should turn to nearby Parramatta.
Pirtek Stadium is set for a paltry $29 million upgrade that will increase capacity marginally and give the popular but run-down ground a minor facelift. So instead of Botox let’s give the place plastic surgery.
The Wanderers, with their growing and wonderfully eclectic supporter base, are suddenly a potent political force in the west.
Wisely the Eels are riding on their coat-tails in a joint effort to have Pirtek Stadium rebuilt — a venture the NRL should back to the hilt, particularly if it is not convinced ANZ Stadium will become an attractive alternative for home and away games.
But building a stadium is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that must allow for the growth in attendance a new venue itself would accelerate.
To be worthwhile New Parramatta Stadium must cater for up to 40,000 fans in comfort with extensive corporate hospitality areas replacing the current tinny-in-an-Esky boxes.
Some believe the current location is not big enough for a new stadium and the associated infrastructure. Meanwhile, the SCG Trust has pandered to its traditional tenant cricket and its fashionable new partner AFL with the lavish redevelopment of the SCG.
It owes it to the wider Sydney sporting public to be just as aggressive and enterprising in seeking funds to redevelop Allianz Stadium.
That not only means upgrading the now badly dated SFS into a — yes — state-of-the-art venue that entices NRL, Super Rugby and A-League crowds with a comfortable, fan and “family-friendly” environment. The plans are on the drawing board.
That means proceeding with proposed underground parking and other measures that ease the traffic/transportation problems that are a major deterrent to many — particularly on Friday night, which should be a marquee football occasion for all codes.
It is refreshing that the stadium conversation is now about “what?”, not “why?”. But get the answer wrong and it will be decades before Sydney has another chance to give sports fans what they deserve.
