North Qld Cowboys thread

I remember back when Justin Smith used to play five-eighth for them, Bowen was straight up five-eighth in attack. Justin Smith played an inside centre type role outside Bowen but he did his front line defence for him.

I think something like that would work even better in today's game with Bowen, but the Cowboys rightly are trying to actually find a long-term halves partner for Thurston instead.

They really lack someone outside of Thurston who can create points for them & that's not just limited to the spine even their forwards & 3/4's lack creativity.

I almost think that losing Thurston and splitting the ~1 million between 3 players that they could build their attack around would have been a blessing in disguise.

Their attack just seems way too predictable atm.

  3. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah they have a very old school forward pack.

I always regarded Bowen as being exceptionally creative for a fullback but his passing game seems a lot less effective now that defences aren't as worried about the threat of his running game as well.

Their season is absolutely stuffed though IMO unless Scotty Moore finds his way in the NRL. Kostjasyn and Thompson may have indeed played slightly better than Moore this season but their ceilings are very low; it's silly to not play Moore at this point I reckon. They don't even need creativity from their hooker as much as they need fast service.

Neil Henry seems to have a limited game plan when it comes to their attack. He has them doing the same predictable shit all the time. Last year it may have worked to an extent but the good teams were always going to shut them down. This year has proven no different except they are now getting beat by teams in last place and playing them into form. The Cowboys were better with a somewhat less structured way of attack, when they could do things based on what was in front of them rather than the same predictable second man plays they do.

Moore is slow from dummy half and from what I have seen does not have what it takes. Unless he were to produce a massive form reversal he has been a dud signing.:bored:

    Broncos will probably sign him...

as I posted in the lineups thread, depending on who they play, they have a huge chance of going 0 and 4 with Bowen out and thurston, Scott and Tate tied up in origin.

Cowboys should have just decided to hunt the ESL properly and thrown sufficient coin at Roby IMO. Either way they signed Greenshilds to a 2 year deal at least. If I were a Cows fan I would let Bowen go to use his coin to get them a 9 who can take pressure off Thurston and their unproven partner for him - which if I were to be making a call would be Michael Morgan with Lui as his backup in case he didn;t perform. - Ray Thompson is fucking shit IMO

Yep. Morgan is the long-term option. Bowen should be let go. He's old, slow, less and less reliable. He does act as an alternate play-maker and he kicks well but that money he's on could be spent on a quality hooker and the team would be a lot better for it. Mango has given great service to the Cowboys but his time is over IMO.

Apparently Neil Henry is two losses away from being sacked. Doesn't surprise me. He hasn't improved the defence, and as Paddy said, the attack is so fucking predictable. They're one of the few teams whose play actually adds up to less than the sum of all it's parts. You think about having the Australian front rowers. The Australian half. A Test quality centre. A few rep quality backrowers. They should be challenging top 6 if not top 4 and they can barely make the 8.

In fact possibly battling to avoid the spoon. They could be equal last this weekend if they lose and other results go against them.

Cows won't win the spoon, but I feel they miss the 8 this year.

They have a good run of home games on the final stretch but that won't mean shit if they will be well out of top 8 contention when they get to that part of the season.

    1.Greenshields

    3.Sam the Eagle aka Tate
    4.Linnett

    6.Thursto
    7.Morgan
    8.Tamou
    9. New Hooker*
    10.Scott
    11.T.Sims
    12.Cooper
    13.Johnson

14.Mitchell/Obst (Signed to Nrthn pride already)
    15.Bolton
    16.Ashton
    17.Taumololo

You could look at Obst as a weird pick but IMO he'd be at least on par with their younger blokes to and he'd be reasonable cover for Mitchell as bench hooker plus cos he's at Pride already you could leave him on peanuts in terms of use of your cap anyway.. They could look to fuck off Ray Thompson/Blake Leary and use that plus Bowen's coin to recruit someone solid for the 9 role. Best 9 off contract for next season IMO now is probs Faloon but I'd be looking at offerring Matt Ballin a real good deal, gets him back to QLD, playing with the QLD 6 week in week out which would solidify his standing as QLD's number two rake and give him a chance to earn better coinI would say too.

    Fien apparently being looked at.

Would be better but there are stronger options out there.

Quality hookers don't grow on trees ffs.

  16. Jazz NC Smith

Was never really an option tbh. The Cowboys went for Moore because he was the only one available. Houghton, Lunt and Roby are all signed to long contracts. The only guy who was available was McIlorum before he re-signed late in 2012. Moore was an ordinary signing but I think if other players had actually been off-contract he wouldn't have been picked up.

    Kingston off contract too correct?

  18. Benny BS Read

I thought he re-signed if not that would be perfect and cheap. Kingston is a qlder too obv so wouldn't be a bad fit in terms of him adjusting to moving etc.

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

The point I was making was that he's far more likely to have a massive form reversal than their other rubbish hookers.

Kingston's been told by Penrith he won't be offered a contract.
