No-one is talking about discarding him .......simply taking the captaincy off him, to which you think he'll crack the shits

He has the option to knuckle down (sans captaincy) and play hard

    or leave.

    Simple.

I certainly don't think Brisbane will be held over a barrel by Thaiday because of the captaincy. If it didn't work for Wally, sure as shit it's not going to work for Thaiday.

Yeah and that worked out well...

    I'll lock in C.

    For Brisbane .....?

I guess it did. We won a premiership 2 yrs later.

Brisbane have a history of being able to make the hard calls.....unless Thaiday's game lifts significantly, it'll be made sooner for him than he thinks.

He's got another year's grace from me ....but I suspect that decision is highly motivated by my lack of consideration for any other real prospects.

We won the premiership in 1992 and with Allan Langer as captain; not Gene Miles. We finished 7th the year after Lewis left (missing the finals). When Lewis was there the year before (1990), we finished equal 1st and got within 1 game of the GF.

Bennett has since tried to retrospectively justify getting rid of Lewis by saying if we didn't make that move we mightn't have got Lockyer. That is absurd beyond words and I think betrays a note of guilt or at least overcompensation on Bennett's part.

  6. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

Where did you read that ....and what was his reasoning?

I've heard something similar said about Kevie Walters, not Lockyer.

I'll have to look for it. I might have a video of it somewhere in my archives. I know for a fact, because I was so taken aback by it, that he said Lockyer and not Walters. I know he made the same argument about Walters, though, as you said. The line was that they didn't offer Lewis what he commanded by way of salary because they wanted to focus on retaining younger talent. That's fair enough but Lockyer was 14 at the time. It's absurd.

Thaiday is hardly the same quality as Wally Lewis.

  9. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Quality is not really that relevant. Lewis was a Bronco for 2 and a half years when he was stripped. Thaiday has been at the Broncos for ten years.

Well it's up to him if he wants to bitch about it or not, but he has been poor and a disgrace as a captain. I'm not saying we drop him from the side at the moment, but play him off the bench and see if he wants to lift his game.

If the team is failing and you're no longer playing 80 minutes or even a certain pick for the starting lineup then I don't think you're in any position to get shitty about being stripped of the captaincy.

I agree with MF that it's important to consider the implications when it comes to a "long service player", and Thaiday leaving is certainly not desirable, but if he can't listen to what is some very strong reasoning then it's not Brisbane's fault. It's Thaiday's fault for being a dickhead.

Bench captain ftw. Just ask Kurt.

  13. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Yes but you have to factor in his proclivity to be a dickhead about it. You may be perfectly logical in stripping him of captaincy and putting him on the bench but if that's gonna get up his goat to the point of him considering leaving, then I reckon you have to think twice about it. Personally, I think he needs to be put back on the fringe, targeting tiny cunts and playing his usual minutes.

  14. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

    Indeed...!!

You're simplifying Lewis's importance to Brisbane (back then). If it weren't for his massive presence in the game, the Broncos may not have even existed when they did. It was a huge call from Bennett.

IMO it'll be much easier to make the same call on Thaiday......

  15. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I'm not simplifying it. Just saying he wasn't owed the same sort of loyalty that Thaiday is. I still think it was a dud call from Bennett.

  16. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

Yeah nahhh .....bench captain? How embarrassing.....

We're in a pickle with Thaiday. Painted ourselves into a corner. He has to start.

I guess if his form improves, the problem goes away.....can he / will it ??

    Not sure.....

  17. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

The most annoying thing is that he will still wear the #12 for Australia.

  18. Cribbage RG Cribb

I don't think you really do. Being a long service player does earn him a lot, I agree with you on that more than most would, I think. But it doesn't earn him the right to hold onto the captaincy just because he'd carry on like a dickhead if he lost it. Being a long service player in conjunction with being a really important part of Brisbane's on-field plans for next season would, but, well..

Therein lies our disagreement, I guess. As with our disagreement about his place in the QLD team before Game II (in which, I hasten to add, he did his job admirably by running all over Maloney:p) I still think he has plenty to offer. When moved up front in said match, I thought he looked completely at sea. I simply don't think he is cut-out to play middle third. Not as a starter, anyway...
