From what I saw of him as a junior, I'm pretty sure Menzel's a bona fide small (/gen) forward. He's been trained in the defensive/OTB techniques that most small forwards nowadays (failed backs who've gone forward, young developing midfielders or rotating midfielders) don't have. Given they've gone down the 'not gonna play forward fifty' line with Varcoe and Motlop I can see how structurally important Menzel is.

But that's not a credit to him, it's a discredit to the defensive/otb techniques of the Geelong forwards. He's just filling a hole, just like Clinton Young would have filled a hole for the pies.

 

Hopefully going to get down and see him play this week, excited.

It's not that I don't rate Menzel - it's that I haven't been given a reason to rate or not rate him. He's done exactly as I expected of him and been really unlucky in his career.

I'm sure, in fact I hope, that he'll give me one to but 20 odd games in the forward line with the greatest supply in the afl is too little to judge him on.

He's certainly done nothing wrong.
