At the request of Frizzed, I've had a look at the calculations for open play moves - which include Pick 'n' Gos. I don't think the calculation is wrong per se - it's certainly doing what I programmed it to do, however there are a couple of issues. Firstly, when it decides who will be doing the pick and go, it's weighted towards players with a good combination of Strength and Speed. Whilst I don't think this is wrong, given the comparative post rank of Back Rowers in most teams compared to their Front Rowers, it tends to calculate that a Back Rower will be doing the work more often. Whilst this probably isn't particularly unrealistic, maybe the weighting between Strength and Speed could be moved. Basically, at the moment the sim would pick Humble or Boobidy more often than Benny or Frizzed. For the Spartans, any back rower would be selected more often than 99* or Storer, but Eggman would be right up there in the mix. I'm loathe to change things mid season that could impact on the calculations and outcomes, but point 2 makes me wonder if it's worth doing... Point 2 is that Pick 'n' Gos are rolled up in all other open play moves. This means that to the layman looking at the output, you wouldn't be able to tell a pick 'n' go from a normal open play move. This also means that when the sim produces commentary, it doesn't have any pick 'n' go specifics in there. If I changed this (which would be quite a significant change) I could probably add some pick 'n' go statistics too - well, at least the number of pick 'n' gos by player. Thoughts?
Think it's a must at some point. Your choice whether we do it mid-season. Would probably make more sense to do it at the end of the season.
I think you should definitely change it. May as well do it now as we're only a few games into the season.
Yeah, but from my perspective #2 requires significantly more work, but I wouldn't change #1 without also changing #2.
Do it at the end of the season imo, should keep the simulator concistent in a season. Saying that pick n gos is something I should never do as a player so probably im not the best person to ask
Good inclusion for the end of the season, keep it consistent and go with the old sim for this season and the new sim for next.
I've had a look at it, and I know what needs to be done. I need to come up with a pick 'n' go likelihood formula that's a bit more realistic. Probably something where strength cubed + speed *0.5 + crash ball or something like that. Something which makes props come out highest, then back rowers, then locks but still leaves an outside chance that a crash ball focused centre would attempt a pick and go. I'd probably then split open play moves into two - open play and pick and go. Which would probably double the length of the existing formulas which are already like this: =IF(B720="","",IF(B711="Hurricanes",((VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$3:$AE$18,9,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$3:$AE$18,10,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$3:$AE$18,14,FALSE))*VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$4:$AE$18,22,FALSE)),IF(B711="Spartans",((VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$24:$AE$38,9,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$24:$AE$38,10,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$24:$AE$38,14,FALSE))*VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$24:$AE$38,22,FALSE)),IF(B711="Sharks",((VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$44:$AE$58,9,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$44:$AE$58,10,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$44:$AE$58,14,FALSE))*VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$44:$AE$58,22,FALSE)),IF(B711="Vikings",((VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$64:$AE$78,9,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$64:$AE$78,10,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$64:$AE$78,14,FALSE))*VLOOKUP(C719,'Squads'' Players Stats'!$A$64:$AE$78,22,FALSE)),"Error"))))) Now, I'm not sure if Excel 2007 has a formula length restriction but older versions did (which I'm already well past). Otherwise, I might need to change my data tables which would be a massive undertaking. Doable though.
In Excel 2007, the maximum length of formula contents is 8,192 characters and the maximum internal formula length is 16,384 bytes.
usually the person who pick and gos is a combination of likely hood to go foward (irrespective of defenders) and potential to force the defensive team to commit numbers and give up width out wide. If the latter is on then almost anyone will pick and go irrespective of how good they are, aslong as the likelyhood to retain ball and get quick ball is there to be had.
Think #2 should definitely happen and no reason why it shouldn't happen now considering that we changed the stats output halfway through last season with the addition of line breaks IIRC.
Except #2 is a much larger undertaking than adding in LBAs. Would probably delay simming for at least a couple of weeks.
Do it for next season IMO. I would have no problems with #2 coming in now but if that's a fair bit of work may as well do it all together for next season.
