Morgie's Draft Review S4

Discussion in 'CPL Cricket' started by morgieb, Dec 13, 2019.

  1. Skippos SM Morgan

I picked Dowrich because he had the safest record of any batsman available. He was also the highest available test ranked batsman. Averages 40 and 42 over the last two calendar years in test cricket. That he can keep was just a bonus and frees up a later pick to not have to take a rubbish backup. Rizwan easily pick of the round along with Shadab, who somehow happened to not be the best Pakistani spinning allrounder taken that round. Hafeez

FTR I probably won't write any reviews until late Monday/Tuesday as I've got three 12 hours shifts in a row for the next few days and given travel will basically have zero time for long internet usage. Especially given I've got to research my own picks.

    Excite!

    >post just announces he's not gonna post

    Booo. But fair enough reason.

    Round 10
    1. spark!ptz - Sarfraz Ahmed (227760)
I know he hasn't been in good touch lately and the value of wicket-keepers seems low, but getting Sarfraz in Rd 10 is a great move.

    2. Dhokchau - Mahipal Lomror (853265)
Very hard to justify picking an Indian batsman averaging under 40 in FC cricket given their structure unless they've had a lot of international experiance, which Lomror doesn't. He can bowl a bit I guess but even then I can't imagine it would be anything important. A very ordinary pick and someone who probably didn't even deserve to go at all.

    3. Chewie - Scott Kuggeleijn (539548)
I get the logic at least. Maybe not the option I'd go for, and not sure how well he'd fare as a proper all-rounder, but it's a fair enough call if you wanted a quick bowler who could bat #8.

    4. Howe and Dan - Baba Indrajith (477069)
Initially thought this was a bad pick because I was thinking of his twin brother who's average isn't good. But looking at his record it's easy to see that he's dominated. Decent pick even though ??? remain about the quality of attacks he's faced.

    5. Captain - Ben Coad (566685)
Good pick. Has been dominant in county cricket and AFAIK most of it was in Div 1.

    6. GoodAreasShane - Heinrich Klaasen (436757)
Not really sold here, he hasn't done all that much at FC cricket recently when you consider that South African domestics has been fairly batting friendly and his ODI and A-team stuff hasn't been good. I think better options were left over.

    7. MrPrez - Temba Bavuma (372116)
He's a bit of a tough one to pick in a CPL sort of situation as the way he plays at Test level doesn't suit itself well to the format and his overall Test record is ordinary. Still he does maintain a good franchise record and getting any Test player who isn't complete shit at this point is a good move. Good pick.

    8. Phlegm - Dinesh Karthik (30045)
This is a good pick for the keeping slot though. His recent FC form has been good and he's done well at ODI level. Won't set the world on fire but he's a solid option.

    9. Alex - Hassan Azad (348191)
Tough to gauge - he was great last season but it's only one season, and it also came in Div 2 (though in fairness the gap means less for bowlers than batsmen). Not sure how well he balances Cook either. Still, hard to complain too much.

    10. Baxter - Ian Bell (9062)
Taken after everyone else in the round so that has to be taken into account. I find this pick hard to rate because there's a lot of pros and cons here. On the one hand, his most recent FC season was excellent and he has a lot of Test pedigree. On the other hand, that was over a year ago (and in Div 2) and his Test runs are basically ancient history at this point. Still, not a lot of great options left in terms of good batsmen....

    11. Magrat Garlick - Rahkeem Cornwall (494581
Interesting one. On paper, given the pitches in the West Indies his averages run risk of being a no-rounder. But he has done very well for the A-team and took a 10-fer at Test level recently. I think it's a fair enough pick.

    12. StephenZA - Jason Smith (498582)
Seems a bit too no-roundery, for me. I guess having Second can mask it a bit but probably a bit early and given your next pick it's hard to see the balance advantages.

    13. Skippos - Bilal Asif (498875)
Without his Test performances this wouldn't be a great pick, but he did rather well in those apperances that I'm surprised he hasn't got a better crack at did. Did well in the most recent domestic season too on utter roads.

    14. Athlai - Younis Khan (43652)
Has been nearly three years since he retired. Makes it a bit difficult to judge, but was an ATG while playing. Should still have value here, but is risky.

    15. Boobidy - Peter Nevill (6973)
Hard one to gague; two years ago getting him this late would've been an utter steal but his form hasn't been too flash recently. His most recent Shield season has been a lot better though and his keeping still remains excellent. Probably not many better keepers left over so a solid pick.

    16. Hunter - Senuran Muthusamy (535393)
Not sure what to make of this choice. Strikes me as somewhat no-roundery, but I guess bowling spin in South Africa isn't easy. It's not a stinker but maybe not my choice.

    17. Gazza - Olly Stone (457279)
A lot of value; his last full season was dominant and unlike most bowlers picked around here actually has some wheels. Nice choice.

    18. HeathDavisSpeed - Jan Frylinck (482478)
Risky. His FC record isn't all that special given the opposition he's played against, and while his ODI performances have been excellent thus far the sample size isn't big and it has mostly come against weak opposition. Not a terrible pick but better options were out there and I doubt he was on many people's radars at this point.

    19. Julian - Moises Henriques (5961)
Has been a tad hit and miss in his recent domestic career and his bowling is becoming less and less relevant, but still a good option at this point.

    20. Benny - Marques Ackerman (596436)
Very small track record in proper cricket. He has done well at franchise level and still has a good second team record but yeah probably a bit too risky at this point I think

    21. Number 11 - Devon Smith (52962)
Despite being shit at Test level, his domestic stuff is excellent when you consider how hard it is to bat in West Indian domestic stuff. Very good pick at this point.

    22. morgieb - Mehidy Hasan (629063)
I'm probably over-rating him and his H/A record gap is worrying, but really he should've been picked over plenty of specialist spinners/spinning all-rounders that went before him IMO. Being able to bat is the cherry on top of the cake.

    23. jimmy_c8 - Sam Hain (555850)
Is coming off an excellent season at Div 1 cricket, but before that his FC record wasn't anything to really write home about. Still, can be justified at this point in the draft but I think there were better English bats leftover.

    24. Cabinet96 - James Vince (296597)
Even though he's never really been convincing at international level, he's still a good batsman at the next level down. Good pick.

    Best pick:

A lot of "good" picks, but not a lot of great ones I think. Reckon the best was Sarfraz.

    Worst pick:

    Has to be Lomror.

  7. Athlai JJD Heads

Best was Younis Khan, followed by Sarfraz.

  8. Athlai JJD Heads

Mehidy was a pretty average pick. His last year was abysmal and he sucked for you last year in cwpl when he was theoretically much better. I love the bloke but he was impossible to justify.

  9. morgieb MC Burridge

Actually averaged <30 in the CWPL. He was one of the few guys that probably did live up to (my) expectations in my team.

His last year was kind of dire yeah, but the sample size was pretty small in fairness, it probably hurts a little bit but I think the impact is a bit exaggerated.

  10. Athlai JJD Heads

Also the Bilal analysis is woeful. 2019 in Pakistans domestic scene has been a batting paradise and bowlers have been utterly awful. One of the only exceptions of that is Bilal who has a gun record. Fc record helps him plenty.

  11. morgieb MC Burridge

I did make reference to that in fairness :p

But historically Pakistani domestics has been really bowler friendly, him averaging 27 really isn't a terrific sign even if he's been good this season.

  12. Skippos SM Morgan

Bilal did well in test cricket 18 months ago, dominated the Pakistani domestic season on roads and took 11fa in their first class final last week. It was a good pick. Mehdi has been pre pee poo poo for some time now. Turn it up.

The reason there were no ‘great picks’ this round is that it’s round ten in a 24 team comp. every pick now is speculative, risky and a guess. Very hard to stand out. It’s why I think bilal? Younis, Sarfraz and Karthik were the best picks in the round - because unlike most, you can clearly see a role they’ll be able to play in an XI and not be a potential liability doing it

Bilal was a great pick tbh.

As for why he hasn't played Tests played -- Pakistan haven't played two spinners in a Test since he last played one. No more UAE games will probably hurt his chances but between him doing well in his last Test stint and having an awesome domestic season I'm sure he'd still their second choice (or first choice for second spinner). Misbah being coach now will only help his chances as he made the case for him years ago when no-one else rated him. Misbah's been such a hardarse with his established players since he took over that it wouldn't even shock me that much for Yasir to be dropped for him (he was dropped so they could play four quicks at home recently, for example).

  14. morgieb MC Burridge

Where on earth did I say it was a shit pick? The fact that he did well in the Tests he played makes it so.

  15. Athlai JJD Heads

    Top 5 picks

    Younis khan
    Safraz Ahmed
    Devon Smith
    Ian Bell
    bilal

  16. Cribbage RG Cribb

Probably would've been an okay pick even without the Tests tbh. They definitely help though.

  17. morgieb MC Burridge

Will freely admit though re: Mehidy I had no idea he was averaging 80 last year. Not doing full research apart from bagging everyone else's picks is killing me a bit. Hopefully it was just a blip on the radar :p

  18. Cribbage RG Cribb

Mehidy has such a bad year that in Bangladesh's last Test he was dropped for not only Nayeem (spud), but Ebadot (Bangladeshi fast bowler and therefore superspud) even though Shakib was also banned and they already had two other superspud quicks in their side.

He came back in as a concussion sub for a batsman but wasn't allowed to bowl. Didn't make any runs.

  19. Athlai JJD Heads

I for one am enjoying morgies picks imploding

  20. morgieb MC Burridge

Still started the draft well enough I think it'll still be one of the better sides. Probably have been below average last 4 rounds though; I don't think any of them were stinkers though (then again there's only been a couple of really shit picks so far).
