    Well it was hyped up for a few different reasons.

    The first of which being, I felt like it. I started the thread early. This probably contributed to people thinking it was a slightly bigger game than it really was, but I was in a good mood, so why not?

    There's also the fact that this was the first live BS game on the new server. Quicker load times, no time-outs etc - made it a bit more exciting in general.

    Most importantly though, it basically decided who got the early running on the first quarter of the competition. Every other season we've always had a heavy favourite but these teams are pretty evenly matched and both started really well. Whoever won would more than likely claim favouritism for now and essentially 'win' the first part of the season. Obviously it probably won't mean much at the end of the season, as such, but it changes the context of how we see things now, giving us a defined frontrunner.

    Yeah, I reckon we'll lose to you guys. With a weakened bowling against your batting lineup, it's gonna be really hard.

    Yeah, the first part contributed the most. It was left with time for a massive build up so it inevitably got one. Just there's a risk of things being blown slightly out of proportion.
    Obviously a match between the two best sides in the competition is a good thing, just to say that it's going to be pivotal in deciding the title is a little short sighted IMO. There's a load of teams who could potentially upset either of these sides, so the Stingrays have a fair few chances to make up the ground yet. Lest us forget these sides actually have to play each other again later this season.

    Forgot about the new server, not sure how much that would've excited some people though :p

    You say the most important reason is "it gives us a frontrunner for the first quarter of the competition".... My point was, how important is that?

    Well my point is.. how important is the importance of a match as to its adequate hype level?

    The match may or may not have a deciding impact on the way the season plays out, but regardless of that the result was always going to be very interesting and potentially shape how we view the competition from here. How we view the competition has little to no relevance to how it will actually play out, but there are aspects to the competition beyond its eventual result.

    The hype was based on interest rather than importance, but that doesn't mean it's invalid.

    The contribution to the entire season will be the splitting of 10 points in each match. You're right.

    However, when the second match is played there will be ridiculously less unknowns. As it stands there are an infinite number of variables to decide the title race. Come Round 10 there will be decidedly less variables, meaning that what the Rays can control/influence is much higher in terms of a percentage. So "there's more riding on it" IMO.

    Yeah, could be more things riding on it, but who cares. This game could also be the start of a breakway, which could mean the last round will be pointless.

    Doesn't mean we can't have a important match early in the season.

    Like I said, I can understand interest in the match, just the way it was built up by some was bizarre.
    I can take the match for what it is; a contest between two very good, equally measured and potentially title winning sides.
    Saying it is much more than that right now shows no perspective.

    The R10 match could be an absolute dead rubber. Who knows?
    You can't be sure of its importance until we're close to playing it. It definitely has the potential to be much more important than this match though.
    What this game could be and what it is are entirely different things.

    It was a gun match between two gun sides.
    Just I think it's shortsighted to call it pivotal in deciding who wins the title.
