If Gunston is good to go who would you bring him into the side for?

What do you guys think are the keys to stopping the Hawks?

In my opinion, it's a matter of pressuring the ball carrier and not allow them time on the ball. The chip kicks and control of possession are fundamental to setting up scoring plays for the Hawks. The way the Weagles pressured them in the Qualifying final was ideal imo.

If the Hawks stop Priddis & Gaff, it'll be game over. We saw last week how much of an influence that had in North controlling the first quarter/half

Yeah can't sit numbers behind the ball. Gotta do all your work up the ground with the Hawks, they get a bit shaky under pressure around their defensive 50.

  10. MightyPies DA Alessi

Yeah. When the game isn't on their terms they get shaky but their class and resilience normally sees them come out the other side and shake it off.

When theyre up and about all guns blazing, I think they're unstoppable

Got a bunch of players in the back half like Gibson, Lake, Suckling and so on when they don't have that time and space really start to turn the ball over in bad spots.

Spot on about the pressure. Quick to man the mark, force them back on their line to kick to slow down the quick chip. Easier said than done though, especially on the expanses of the G

In saying that Hawks gotta stop them up the ground or I don't see anybody capable of stopping Kennedy.

I'd say to stop us it's downfield pressure. For us, we're all about uncontested marks and slowly making our way forward.

Against the Eagles in the prelim we had like 70 uncontested marks, against freo we had about 150 iirc.

Force us to kick long down the line to a contest and you've won half the battle.

In saying all that, it's waaaaay easier said than done

Honestly the Weagles current game plan is pretty ideal towards stopping Hawthorn. Lots of pressure, heavy reliance on forward 50 turnovers, etc. You can't beat Hawthorn with an uber-defensive game plan IMO.
