AFL free agency:

  1. is terrible, if I could I'd get rid of it

    21.4%
  2. is okay, but I'd like to see it minimised a bit

    14.3%
  3. is good, keep it as is

    28.6%
  4. is great, I'd love to see it expanded upon

    35.7%

They should have trade him though. Were willing to put St Kilda for to the sword for Cripps.

He played WAFL on the weekend, hopefully he walks out on them for free

It'd be so shit, couldn't even imagine.

Well if someone's been passed over in the draft, and you've got room under the cap.. why shouldn't you be allowed to pick him up mid-season? I see absolutely no reason for it. It's not just that I disagree; I just don't see the other side.

You lock up a key component for a certain amount of time?

I don't get this at all.

Would you rather Selwood on a 5 year deal or 2 year deal?

Cripps was out of contract though.

Uncontracted players have just as much power over clubs, if not more. Look at what Tippett did to the Crows.

It's just an AFL thing I guess. You get a list of 44 (I think haha) and that's the list for the year, you change it up at the end of each season.

Don't ask me why, it's just no business has been done for 20 years.

I think the point he's making is that players can seemingly just walk out on contracts whenever they feel like it, but a club can't say "Nah actually it's not working out anymore so you're cut and we're not paying you."

In which case there really is no point in a club signing someone to a five year deal, because it traps them into paying the bloke for five years but if he wants out earlier then he'll just walk.

But my whole point revolves around the fact that contracted players are demanding a trade. That's not their right, IMO. If Selwood signed a 5 year deal, he gets long term job security even if he's shit. That's a major advantage on his part. With a 2 year deal he doesn't get the J/S but if he's good he's got the option to look for a better contract/seachange.

Currently, players on 5 year deals are performing well after 2 years and then demanding a trade or pay rise, while if they're shit they expect their contract paid out. If they're going to do that, why bother taking the gamble of a long term contract. Players have too much power.

Wouldn't you be pissed if you signed Selwood to a 5 year deal, he wins 2 brownlows in the 2 following years and said 'i refuse to play if you don't pay me more or trade me to someone who will' - you signed up up for 5 years and he accepted the lack of control for his long term security, and now he's trying to ditch that agreement. it's the best of both worlds.

I've always said that the rookie list should be filled with state league players 21+ years old plus that can be used as replacements if you get injuries or if they dominate enough to force a way into the side.

90% of the the rookies drafted now probably don't even play a game.

Yeah, this is a more eloquent version of what I mean.

Should have traded fair though. They both had something of pretty much equal value that the other wanted.

The deal offered to Brown was insane too. 4 years @ 400k or something like that.

I mean it's like in cricsim.

If I got dropped to ALC I'd with good reason want a move to somewhere so I could play BS.

But it's not my right to refuse to play mid season and demand to play BS or be released so I can. Just like it's not the clubs right to cut a hughesy mid season because they're a dire cunt.

Currently in the afl, to compare to cricsim, the club have to put up with the poster if they're a dire shunt but if the player's not happy, have to fuck them off mid season.

The benefits would be that the majority of players don't do this. Even if they do, you're gonna get some value in return, he doesn't walk for free/a third round shit pick.

It's not long before contracts are gonna half guaranteed and incentive money too imo, so he'd have to play a certain amount of games to earn what he wants.

one thing I've always hated is clubs being able to trade out of contract players.

they're out of fucking contract. nominate for the PSD or sign a new one. The club also shouldn't have rights to cash in a player without a contract.

That's what trades are; you're buying a player out of a contract with currency. In the afl, that currency is players and picks. Someone like Cripps or Tippett were expected by their clubs to have a fair trade arranged and their contracts 'bought out'

BUT THEY HAD NO CONTRACT TO BUY OUT.

I'm glad we lost tippett for nothing. he was out of fucking contract and rightly went to the PSD.

All we'll see is clubs resting players for the season when they're 1 game short of the mark and injured players crying fowl though.

In the NRL, if a player just straight up walked out on his contract without the club agreeing to it and refused to play, he'd be de-registered and no-one else would be able to sign him until his original deal expired. As happened with Sonny-Billy Williams.

Does that not happen in the AFL? Can players just walk out and find their way back into the system immediately with another club?

Obviously it'd be per game, not per amount of games.

Selwood earns 880,000. That's 40,000 a game. Not he gets his 880,000 at 15 games or something.

  19. Mousey AJ Son

    Or partial money.

440,000 guaranteed, 20,000 extra for each game he plays.

Would have to wait until the draft, but yeah I'd say so. But I think the club has to terminate the contract?

Similar to the Carey incident or did he sit out a year?
