    How so? Were the Roosters/Knights/Parra after him at one stage and Smith being there turned Gallen away?

    Paul Gallen was a diehard Parramatta fan as a kid. There was a photo on a Parra forum a few years back leaked of Paul Gallen's blue and gold draped bedroom as a 10 year old or whatever. His dream was always to play for Parramatta and he was at the club in the lower grades... Brian Smith told him that he thought he had no future in first grade, certainly had none with Parramatta and should look for another club. Then Cronulla picked him up and the rest is history. Apparently that heartbreak spurred him on to work harder on his fitness and become the maniac workhorse he is today, and it probably contributed to the loyalty he shows Cronulla for giving him another chance as well.

    This sort of crap is why I'll never support the Parramatta Eels. They do not represent rugby league in the district or their fans; they just represent their own brand.

    I was surprised the article wasn't actually about that tbh, it's a good story.

    Shit. I had no idea about that. Lol. Parra were actually quite good for most seasons between 01 and last year. And I don't particularly mean their 09 surge either. Add Gallen to their squad over the past decade and who knows what they'd be like. However, as you said above, the snub spurred him on so he may not be the player he is today.

    Just checkin through the history books, and I was there for his debut. Dad's company was the matchday sponser got to go on the field at half time and even in the dressing shed, if only I could find that jersey all the players signed.
