Nonsense. It didnt help but on another day we could have beaten the Aussies and if we did it by more than 7 points then Wales only needed a losing bonus point to knock the Aussies out. If wed beaten the Aussies wed have probably topped the group

Aus dominated us but we were 10 points up on Wales a couple of times, really shouldn't loose a game at home against an injury ravaged backline when 10 points up. Thats where it went not against a fantastic Aus performance.

To go out we had to lose two games. To blame it solely on the Wales defeat is silly

The Wales game was very, very winnable. To put it mildly.

But you didn't and lost by 20 points.

Sure Australia could have lost Hooper to a yellow card but there were other English players who could also have been sent off.
The difference in the scores could have been bigger too as Australia missed a couple of early chances.

Had you beaten Wales then Australia would of faced an unbeaten England and appeared a little more imposing.
But I think given Australia won the Championship they were favourites all along.

We were 7 points behind with 10 minutes to go until Farrell got sent off and Australia's first 10 points came from two uncharacteristic mistakes from Mike Brown - first stepping into touch after taking a kick which landed infield, then knocking the ball on from another kick. I disagree that Australia could have had much more than they got, they were pretty damn clinical and that was the difference - they took their chances while stopping us before we were able to threaten them with our own.

Australia weren't favourites all along, that's hindsight talking

Mate. As a kiwi the one side I don't want to face in a final is Australia.
They were more than clinical. They dominated the scrums, the breakdown and lost there way a little in the second half but they deserved the win.

We'll never know how the last ten would have gone without the yellow card but my money would still have been on Australia even with the pulling some critical players off.

Sammy Burgess probably headed back to the NRL asap

Their pack did dominate us but as i said we had all the momentum 7 points behind going into the last 10 minutes and had gifted them 10 early on. The Wales game serves as a reminder that the best team on the night doesnt always win and we had the chance to win that game but didnt quite get their.

Yes sure you can say the Wales game was our best chance to get through the group but we had ambitions of winning this thing so we should be thinking about winning every game. Saying we were never going to beat Australia, aside from being inaccurate, is completely passing the buck

I don't think that either of the games was unwinnable going into them but the Welsh game was thrown away. The comparision between how we played and how Aus played meant we were never going to win on that night.

Doubt it, he will want finish the job he started

although I hate the fact the british media are pin pointing him and even had a go at Andy Farrell over suposed influence on people picked. Although the same media outlet think Brad Barrett played well in all 3 games

    What job is that?

Trying to make it at Rugby Union, it's something he has always wanted to do it at some point, he is in it for the long haul

Fair call. Wish him all the best. I do think he is best served to return to the game he excels at more though. He's a giant of league yet a minnow of union

It's true he is a giant in League. I hope he does come back to league at some point. But it's a Big fish in a small pond so to speak

Feel a bit sorry for him tbh. Couldn't really command a spot in the England midfield...even when Brad Barritt was there. Who is possibly the worst and most ineffectual back in attack and defence I have seen selected by top tier nations I have watched in the last 40 years

Yeah, I think if they actually played rugby and not just kick and chase he would have been fine, but it also proves why he needs to be at flanker, give him the ball to run with and add mobility to the pack

He's certainly not ineffectual in defence. He commands our defensive line and when he went off against Australia he had made more tackles than any English player (was 13 or something iirc) and had not missed one. He is exceedingly ineffectual going forward - offers the bosh up or the dummy run and that's it but he's in the side because he is a defensive machine

I wouldn't say never but imho I'd of given them an 80% chance to win just before the yellow card which totally sealed your fate barring some kind of intercept but even that wouldn't win the game.

At this point and time with their full complement I think Australia will beat Wales convincingly... they'll likely be there at the end too. (Hope not)
