    Still Victorian. Ashamed of it.

No, he went to primary school in country Victoria. He chose to represent Victoria in 2008. Victorian.

I think he considers himself a vic but prefers not to say as he's aligned with both. Early in his career he was from SA; he kinda switched for some reason.

He's the image of AFL in NSW though, for all purposes he's a NSWman.

I'm aware - although it's like 55% vic, 45% sa. I'll still claim him proudly. I'm more angling at the whole 'he's the face of NSW footy' vibe though, a bit like Voss would be a QLDer in some senses despite being a vic.

Nah, Goodes is actually good and performs. I don't understand the hate from Mousey's troupe. A lot of claims about him made from these blokes but I don't hear them being explained.

Cooney in his prime was something else. Just his explosive ability and footskills were incredible to watch 4-5 years ago.

    So does Hayne.

In both cases the media faps over them and causal fans too often overcompensate by calling them hacks.

  6. Cribbage RG Cribb

    Yeah; like Hayne.

  7. Skippos SM Morgan

    Ah I see.

I always thought Hayne was awesome often but prone to absolute shockers and overrated by the media due to his occasional awesomeness and underrated by the public due to his odd shocker.

    Lack of league knowledge ftl.

Its ok the reason you would have that opinion is the only time the media raps hayne is when he pulls off a miracle try or if he scores a hattrick in a huge eels win. The eels are shit currently so even if Hayne is positionally great, returns the ball well and adds to his teams mediocre attack the media doesn't mention it because kicking the Eels in the ribs for another loss in the sunday telucrap sells more papers than an even appraisal. of the game.

Seriously though, Goodes will deservedly go down as an ATG, but the wraps this guy has on him are ridiculous at times. According to the media/Skippos his shit doesn't stink.

The fact is his combination of height, athleticism and skill is almost once in a lifetime, and the guy had a massive impact when he was on, but Goodes wasn't always on. His consistency, for mine, always kept him out of the elite of the elite besides his 2003 Brownlow year. That year he had the ruck as the extra string in the bow, but when he went back to being a midfielder he never stood shoulders above the others, even in his 2006 Brownlow season. He was an elite player, but never the creme de la creme. The fact he was so good for so long is a testament to him, but at times he's spoken of as being Judd like for 10 years, which is beyond ridiculous.

Will make it to the Hall of Fame for sure, but should never be a legend for his on field actions anyway. Off field is another thing, but his on field achievements are not as outstanding as they're made out to be.

I can't argue with a lot of that.

Even with all of that said, it still has him as a top 5-6 player of the millenium IMO.

As a core player being, say, top 10 in a 15 year period + his off field work and the unique element he brings to the game which, honestly, should boost him IMO - he's worth the praise I'm giving him. I'm not saying he's a GOAT, I'm saying he's one of the best of the modern era, and a unique player who deserves recognition for a variety of factors.

Don't get me wrong - I recognise that the consistent performance across his career bar two seasons is great but not elite, but there's so much more to it than that.

  11. Dirk Diggler DM Diggler

Top 5-6 player? Not a chance.

  12. Mousey AJ Son

I think you give too much weight to the fact he's so unique.

I don't give a shit about that when I'm judging his output and comparing it to others.

    Post 2000:
    Gary Ablett jr
    Chris Judd
    Simon Black
    Jonathan Brown
    Dane Swan
    Mark Riccuto
    Nathan Buckley
    Michael Voss
    James Hird
    Adam Goodes
    Jimmy Bartel
    Warren Tredrea

Reckon you'd have this sort of group to sift through to get your best post-2000 players

Yeah depends if you're assessing the 2000-2013 era where the players to have played 10 seasons within it are advantaged or just the best performance on average within the era which'd bring in Roo/Bucks etc. or even just the best player to have played in it.

There are a lot of good players in that group but I reckon you can strike out Hayes, Dal Santo, Mitchell, West and Enright straight away. Even Bartel, Kerr, Black, Swan (could even be in the Hayes group), McLeod and Cousins might be at risk if you had to cull a few more.

Heaps of guns there so culling any of them causes a bit of controversy.

    Bartel >>>>>>>> Goodes

Kerr is definitely in the Hayes group.

The only players that are conclusively better than Goodes in my generation are Ablett and Judd.

That's a little too far. Some of the players Mousey listed were just incredible. For key forwards like pav, brown, tredders and riewoldt to dominate the game in the modern era which at different times was obsessed with flooding, forward press, zone defence and even double teaming was incredible IMO. We're not going to see the goal counts of the 80/90s again, and I bet those fellas from then would struggle now.

Re Kerr - I guess so. 85% of his career now has been just normal for a midfielder. Between injuries where he was never the same afterwards and his lack of tag shaking ability he never quite had the consistently and longevity at the elite level. Those seasons in the premiership era where he was at peak, wow. Was an incredible player at his peak and incredibly underrated on that, just couldn't keep it up. Four seasons shouldn't get you in the elite category though and rightly so.

I reckon Simon Black is pretty underrated on here.
