Any bashing of my favourite player Percy Montgomery will be returned with a swift backhand. The guy was a legend.
In a sport like rugby how do you do ATG teams when the sides are getting bigger, stronger, faster etc with each decade? Genuine question. I don't have much rugby knowledge from before my time and rarely talk about it on forums.
It's a good question. A guy like Alan Hewson would turn up to a training session these days and get laughed and told to go and play badminton because of his size. And if Don Clarke turned up to a training session these days they would assume he was a prop.
Wearing mittens during a test match says it all about Hewson. Terry Wright would be another who would be laughed at these days.
I couldn't pick a greatest team. Like Fiery I have no idea about players before my era. Might have a crack at my favorite 15.
Both guys were excellent players tho. Hewson chimed into the Wellington and NZ backlines between Ebony and Ivory superbly. And Wright was a great speedster and finisher. Both had great flair and vision to be in the right position at the right time.
But tbf reading about players from an era you didn't witness first hand bar a couple scratcy old film reels is not a very accurate way of picking a greatest 15.
If you read enough about these players and hear opinions from their peers you get a pretty good idea. You just need to listen to guys like Fred Allen to hear about who was good and who wasn't etc.
