Season 2 CPL AFL Retentions

Thought I'd get this thread up nice and early so there's no confusion. I've decided that it'd be best to get us back level with the afl so we'll go straight into season 2 after season 1 with the draft inbetween. To make up for the fact that this season was a bit shorter (between 2-6 pre season matches, 7 regular matches and 4 finals matches) I think we'll go with 15 retentions and then 12 for every season after that.

Just for those that aren't aware - retentions are players you keep on your list without having to redraft them. To retain a player, you essentially 'pre draft' them with the same pick you did last time (or similar, depending on trades). So for example I'll retain Tom Mitchell who I picked in round 27, so before the draft happens he'll be locked into my round 27 pick.

There's a real tactical element to retentions. While I might have 15 better players than Tom Mitchell, the gap between Mitchell and any player I might otherwise get at round 27 is huge whereas if I retained, say, Luke Ball in round 15 instead - the gap would be a lot smaller. The best 15 players on your list may not be the best 15 retentions. In fact, I highly doubt that's the case.

Just a few basic rules for retentions in CPL AFL

- You must pick once within a four pick space. That means you cannot retain 4 consecutive players at ANY stage in the draft
- Only twice may you go three picks without taking a live pick
- you may not retain more than 6 players in your first 10 selections
- you may not retain more than 6 players in any 10 selection range at all

This is just to prevent (what I believe would have happened) people from retaining their first 10 picks and the one bloke who doesn't getting fucked over. Also to keep the draft circulating and attempt to keep the 'quality range' or the retentions similar; so people are on average retaining an even number of players through the whole field.

The one piece of advice I'll give about retentions is ask yourself 'how much better is this player than the one I could otherwise select with this pick' - and if the answer is 'much' - then retain.

As for retention order, each list has 34 players (some have 35 thanks to my cock up, just do 35). For those who didn't trade any players, your 'retention order' will simply be the 34 players you drafted in order with retired players removed and the PSD blokes tacked on (in order of how they were taken in the PSD) at the end. It is assumed that pick 1 in the PSD fell directly after round 34 in the main draft.

For blokes who were traded out, they obviously aren't part of your order but blokes who were traded in simply slide in where they were drafted, i.e. a round 5 pick slides in around round 5 - if they were picked ahead of your round 5, then your round 5 slides down to round 6.

Might end up having some blokes a round or three off where you drafted them with but that's fine.

So that's the round pick I'll need to use to retain each of those players. I expect/hope you'll organise this for yourselves and I'll just check for errors afterwards if that's okay.

I'll open up this thread for retentions already so feel free to post yours whenever. Please format it like the above list and bold the players you wish to retain. No code, please. Only post your retention list in here too. Any discussion/questions or anything goes in season 1 discussion or PM me if you'd prefer.

You're free to edit your retention list at any time between now and when I'll close off retentions (3-4 days after the grand final) so there's no reason not to at least post a draft now to make life easy for everyone. The database will undergo some changes over the offseason so it's not advisable to pick players based on CPL AFL performances; I'd certainly recommend using IRL performances.

Also as a sidenote if you plan on giving up your team for next season let me know asap so i can find a replacement to handle all of this on your behalf. Also let me know if you want a name change for next season.

Losing some pretty fucking spiffing picks there. Shattered. Ball @r15, Henderson @r17, Mullett @r20 and especially lynch at r25 are all really quality picks that I can't retain

Would love to retain Simpson too over Hickey (as then I can take Lynch due to the rules) but he's shown sfa. Laird/Shaw/Grigg/Curren also suck
