Monopoly's many common house rules basically made it into a much worse game than it should be, but more appealing to the wider audience. That's not to say the original rules are great, because they're not. That said, this is basically true for most board games that have made it into households as family games. Anything by Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley appeal to families but aren't actually that great among borad games.
