AFL Season 2014

I was hoping to get a guernsey out of him as I've already got tickets. No dice. I walked past a lunchtime display the team were doing in the civic centre. It looked as if about 6 people turned up to watch, sadly.

The attendance will be poor this year as Easter is so close to ANZAC Day. Most of Wellington has gone on holiday for the combo of Easter and ANZAC weekends. We'll probably get 15k turnout at most, but that'll still compare reasonably favourably to the Super Rugby if we get that many.

 

Need the weather to stay dry. The late kick off doesn't help either (8pm here last year) as there was a heavy dew on top of the rain we'd had earlier in the week.

 

A much more enjoyable game in Wellington this year. The closer contest certainly helped, but the conditions were better; especially after the wind died down around quarter time. Both teams struggled for accuracy in the winds in the first quarter.

Looked like some dood with goofy hair may have broken his wrist during the first quarter. He was in quite some discomfort when he came off. Riewoldt had a very disappointing game - only came into it in any way in the final stanza.

 

The game has sadly already attracted an unfavourable review from the local press. Very disappointing given you couldn't have asked for much more from the game. I even saw 4 attempts to run with/bounce the ball this year as opposed to a single epic fail last year. Attendance was 13,500. Not sure if that's a good attendance over in Aus, though I'm guessing not.

With ANZAC Day so close to Easter though, most of Wellington ships out for the double long weekend. Plenty of guys I know who went last year weren't even around Wellington this year as they'd gone away. I suspect they'd have got an extra 5,000 or so otherwise.

Hopefully it's doing well enough for St Kilda to come back again.

 

Ah shit. That's not good. I didn't even see what caused it, but we were sitting right behind the dug-out and he came off there first for the medico to have a peek, and the medico didn't even bother - just led him off down the tunnel.
