I know you might cringe at the thought, but have you consider going into uni to get the right paper work? Hate to see a skill going to waste just because they don't have the paperwork.

Doesn't need to be designer. I reckon with your job experience, and a degree if you do get one, places like Google or other software companies would be a realistic option. You never know.
