FB: Marley Williams - Ted Richards - Nick Haynes
HB: Pearce Hanley - James Gwilt - Andrew Mackie
    M: Rory Sloane - x - Ben Cunnington
HF: x - David Hale - Chris Masten
FF: x - Jack Riewoldt - Matthew Jaensch
R: Dean Cox - Stephen Coniglio - Daniel Rich

    Int: Jack Newnes

I think that looks a bit better than the line-up would have at the same point last draft, perhaps?

Gwilt kinda ruins it. Old, too small for the role he plays and can't even make the bottom team on the ladder's best 22. If he's your CHB you'll concede a lot of goals - he's best equipped as a third tall

  3. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Humph. Was still planning on picking another tall anyway. St Kilda would make anyone look bad.

  4. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

FB: Marley Williams - Ted Richards - Nick Haynes
HB: Pearce Hanley - James Gwilt - Andrew Mackie
M: Daniel Rich - Rory Sloane - Ben Cunnington
HF: x - David Hale - Chris Masten
FF: Jamie Elliott - Jack Riewoldt - Matthew Jaensch
R: Dean Cox - Stephen Coniglio - Cameron Pedersen

    Int: Jack Newnes

The more I think about this, the more confused I get. Would this be a better line-up?

FB: Marley Williams - Ted Richards - Nick Haynes
HB: James Gwilt - Cameron Pedersen - Andrew Mackie
M: Pearce Hanley- Rory Sloane - Ben Cunnington
HF: x - David Hale - Chris Masten
FF: Jamie Elliott - Jack Riewoldt - Matthew Jaensch
R: Dean Cox - Stephen Coniglio - Daniel Rich

I somehow doubt it as Pedersen has been more effective this season where I believe he's been playing forward more.

    Urgh.

  5. Skippos SM Morgan

Pedersen definitely isn't a rover let alone onballer. He's best forward

You've got three 3rd tall back types in mackie, Haynes and gwilt. Haynes probably best equipped to play key back though. I'd look to draft another kpd though and play Haynes off a flank. Pedersen should be forward, probably either ff, chf or a pocket

  6. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

How do I know if someone's a KPD or not? Without knowing enough about the players, AFL player profiles don't generally give me enough information to tell. I've basically been deciding based on their size which might be a reasonable proxy, but clearly isn't the be all and end all.

Supercoach is also misleading as a lot of players they have down as DEF are clearly not necessarily DEF and same with FWD. I'm trying to do research into this, but I'm short of a dart here.

  7. morgieb MC Burridge

Ideally most first/second talls will play CHB/FB.

It can be confusing though if you don't watch a lot of the game.

  8. Skippos SM Morgan

195cm and up and you can generally assume they're a KPD. 192-194 some are third talls and some are KPDs, normally the KPDs are heavier though, below 191 and they're usually 3rd talls/running backs/lockdown backs

  9. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Right. So I've probably got an excess of 3rd tall backs then in Mackie, Haynes and Gwilt?

Whilst Pedersen should still be useful as I don't think I had a backup tall forward last season.

Probably means I should look to trade one of my 3rd tall backs?

  10. Skippos SM Morgan

Haynes can be played forward or on a wing to okay effect. I think there's a spot in the side for all 3 even if they're in defence. Mackie's very good on the rebound so he covers that role anyway, his height is a bonus.

I don't think there'd be many people who'd give you a comparable KPD for one of those third talls. Mackie might have some currency but I still don't think you'd get a good KPD for him and Mackie should be the one you keep.

    I'd keep em all.

    Gwilt - Richards - Mackie
    Haynes - KPD - Hanley

would be a functional defensive unit IMO.

  11. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Ha. 'Functional'. I was obviously hoping for more than lower table mediocrity, but I fear I have already consigned the Mighty Heefs to that ignominy.

  12. MatthewJay TA Miokovic

Hanley and Richards are both A Grade players, Mackie close to that also.

  13. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Okay. So, it's not a disaster - perhaps.

Anyway, I expect to fail, but this is the best run thing on CricSim in ages, and I like AFL so I'd rather be part of it than not involved but fuck, I'm struggling.

  14. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

Does this make some kind of vague sense? Almost have too many options now.

FB: James Gwilt - Ted Richards - Andrew Mackie
HB: Nick Haynes - Lachlan Keeffe - Matthew Jaensch
M: Pearce Hanley - Rory Sloane - Ben Cunnington
HF: Daniel Rich - Andrejs Everitt - Chris Masten
FF: Jamie Elliott - Jack Riewoldt - Cameron Pedersen
R: Dean Cox - David Hale - Stephen Coniglio

INT: James Gwilt, Jack Newnes, Marley Williams

  15. Jackenny JG Enny

I would have Hale as one of your Forwards or perhaps on the Interchange over being a Ruck Rover.

  16. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

So, what are the main qualities you look for in a ruck-rover and rover?

When I played aussie rules, it made bugger all difference as no one was really ideally suited for any position due to the lack of depth in the playing base. We usually have the guy could kick furthest with most accuracy at full back so we didn't get stuck at one end (especially with Wellington's fabled winds). But other than that...

  17. hen da man HRT Daman

Also you have Gwilt on the bench as well as on the field.

  18. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

He's so good and in such demand, I named him twice.

  19. Skippos SM Morgan

Ruck Rover and Rover are essentially midfield positions, same qualities as the wings and centre but you probably want quicker, outside the contest types on the wings.

And if I do anything like last season, I'll go through 75% of the season without realising I'd completely missed a player we'd picked (Rischitelli, as I recall).
