Something has to be wrong with the way Keeping works in the sim. There seems to be absolutely no benefit in signing up as a keeper. The dedicated keepers are equally erratic as the batsman-keeper fill ins. In fact, Downie has the best keeping stat of all-time, somehow.
So, overall keeping ability depends to some extent on your players' fielding rating? Thus, an active batsman could be more successful than a highly inactive keeper? Theoretically?
I think Cribb sets it up on post rank. Stats arent kept for them though, so wouldnt know statistically.
It depends completely on a player's fielding skill - but a non-keeper can only have a fielding skill of 27 of under and the lowest number you can give a keeper is 30. So the worst keeper is still a better than keeper than me or Verigoat. I meant that the ITC gives out fielding performance points for each player after each match - that's what I use for the keeping ratings I post up with the POTS points, and I don't think they're really a great judge of keeping per se.
