Highlight of Colchester's League history was being the highest placed team in East Anglia - ahead of Ipswich, Norwich and Southend. Not sure when that was now. 2005? 2006? Sometime around then. Things haven't been the same since leaving Layer Road.
Layer Road was a shithole though, wasn't it? Not even like Saltergate which had its own sense of derelict charm, or Gay Meadow which was similar (aside from the lack of running water in the toilets, I kid you not). Layer Road was just tiny and ugly.
Yeah. An absolutely charmless dump. But away teams, especially from bigger clubs, hated going to Layer Road. Cuckoo Farm just isn't as debilitating to away teams. Didn't Jamie Cureton win the Championship's Golden Boot. Highlight of that season has to be ensuring that Phil Parkinson got the boot from Hull.
I went there twice. Our best side since relegation won there in 04, and a pathetic shadow of that side went down 0-1 there the following season and looked to be heading down. The benefit of such a tiny place is it always seems full which helps the atmosphere. Seem to remember the area around the ground not being all that bad tbf. Did visit a sex shop on my first visit there.
Rumours abounding of Portsmouth being banned from completing their fixtures this season for financial reasons. Won't happen, and tbh I don't want it to as I'd not like to see any club go under (though these clubs to need to learn the hard way instead of beign bailed out and rebuilding, see Leicester City, for example) but if it did it would leave the table as follows: TEAM, GD, PTS Doncaster +17 71 Bournemouth +14 69 Brentford +12 67 Sheff Utd +17 66 Tranmere +14 65 Yeovil +13 65 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Swindon +27 62 Walsall +6 59 MK Dons +14 58 L Orient +3 58 Which leave me feeling slightly conflicted
Portsmouth relegated to league 2. Will start next season with a 10pt deduction. Has there ever been a bigger fall from grace? From playing European football in the 2008/2009 season to the 4th tier all with-in 5 seasons.
Cunts beat us on their way down though didn't they? And Hartlepool as well. Those two games alone would have been enough to have us sat in 6th now. This post was brought to you from my window ledge, I may or may not jump...
Not in recent memory. Bradford dropped down 3 tiers pretty quickly, and Leeds went from the Champions League to league 1 in under 5 seasons though IIRC.
Shame Bournemouth didn't win the League ahead of some Northern monkeys, but as least they'll get a go in the Championship next season. Can't see them doing particularly well, but they'll be there. And Colchester stayed up by the skin of their teeth. We'll be looking for some decent transfer activity in the off season as this lot are clearly short of where they need to be.
We must have got to league two in 7 as we have been here for 6 years which is still pretty shocking, although can see wolves doing a good job of beating us at that
Serves the shandy drinking tosspots right for whining about not being allowed to lift a trophy that they hadnt yet won.
