Ffs if the Crusaders take Julian Savea from us I'll fucking rage. Use your own fucking players you cunts. You have enough of ours.

  3. the_killerz S Bakkum

He wants a chance to win a title, that ain't happening at the Hurricanes.

  4. Notsure SM Green

Maybe you should wonder why everyone wants to leave your franchise rather than to where the players are going?

  5. Rego RS Hutchinson

No, no, no, he never said that. I would expect he'll stay with the Canes but the Saders chasing him is just a cock move.

He didn't approach the Saders, they approached him.

Saders aren't exactly winning titles either.

  6. Rego RS Hutchinson

He doesn't necessarily want to leave......

The Canes actually have an extremely high rate of player re-signings this year. So no, I dispute the fact players want to leave.....

  7. Rego RS Hutchinson

Oh ffs Lee-Lo signed by Crusaders for 2 years......

Dunno why he would sign with them tbh. He would receive a lot more time at the Canes. He showed some good promise for us towards the end of the season too.

Saders squad is seriously just an NBA team in terms of where players come from. Brings the home feel which the ITM Cup has away.

I mean sure he's from Counties thus not Canes region but at least the majority of our players actually come from within the region.

I legitimately have no expectation that Super Rugby teams should represent any "regions" players. It's far more franchise based than provincial.

    really?

canes "feeder teams" are welington, hawkes bay, manawatu and taranaki.

How does it actually work - do canes get first dibs on those players or not?

Same old Crusaders. Can't win with Cantabrians, let's poach left right and centre and then stick rigidly to them being Cantabrian through and through. You've got more Hurricanes region players than locals these days - and to be less facetious, that's really not good news for Crusaders rugby as you can't rely on imports forever. Canterbury has such a proud history of producing local talent, but why is it suddenly so reliant on imports - well, much more so than it has been previously at least.

I've looked up the origin of the current Canterbury team (as their website makes it an easy task). To add to this, they have at least Zac Guildford and Israel Dagg who play for the Crusaders but are Hawkes Bay locals, but then the Nelson players are Crusaders locals.

    Dominic Bird - Hawkes Bay
Tyler Bleyendall, Dan Carter, Wyatt Crockett, Andy Ellis, Willi Heinz, Nasi Manu, Colin Slade, Tom Taylor, Matt Todd - Local
Ryan Crotty, Mitchell Drummond, Luke Romano, Owen Franks - Nelson Bays
    Corey Flynn - Southland
    Robbie Fruean - Wellington
Paea Fa'anunu, Luke Katene, Kieran Read, Belgium Tuatagaloa - Auckland
Ben Funnell, Luke Whitelock, Adam Whitelock, George Whitelock, Sam Whitelock - Manawatu
    Richie McCaw - North Otago
    Patrick Osborne - Fiji
    Matt Symons - UK
    Codie Taylor - Horowhenua Kapiti
Milford Keresoma, Nepu Laulala - Samoa

So, about 9/30 are born and bred locals.

Maybe it's my hankering for days which are now long gone where you could see your team take to the field, safe in the knowledge that locals were playing with pride in their team and in the jersey. I don't think that Canterbury are by any means alone in doing this - I suspect Waikato have a reasonably low proportion of locals as things stand, but I might be wrong on that. Otago are certainly less populated with locals than they have been in the past.

One thing can certainly not be denied, and that's Canterbury's scouting structure must be vastly superior to anyone else's and they must know how to convince youngsters to move to Christchurch without the promise of first-team footy. Tuatagaloa was playing for Wellington in the ITM Cup last year, I don't think he's turned out for Canterbury yet.

Not any more. I think teams can offer circa 20 contracts to players (which the player can reject) and then any remaining unsigned players are available for any team to pick up - though negotiation can be done in advance of the opening 20 contracts.

It's a real shame and it's the main reason that I don't particularly like Super Rugby. I'll be gutted if the ITM Cup keeps heading down a similar path - there's much more player movement now than there used to be.

I personally wouldn't mind if Super Rugby saw even more internationals coming in to it to make it the premier rugby tournament in the world.

The ITM cup though I think should be the opposite. Homegrown only.

Yeah Heef sums my opinions on the matter up, pretty well.

Whilst I'm all for having the odd signing here and there, constantly poaching players gets a bit tedious and brings something away from the game.

Just annoying to develop players (they show promise) only to be pinched.

I know there's some sort of player pool/ market for NZ coaches to nab players off.

Old statement but probably still true:

"Once a player signs a Provincial Union Development Contract or a Provincial Union Contract he is ‘employed’ under the Collective Employment Agreement. A player must be on one of these types of contract to play in the Air New Zealand Cup. The Provincial Union named on a player’s contract determines his “Home Super Rugby Franchise” for the purposes of Rebel Sport Super 14 selection.

A player on one of these types of contract automatically agrees to be a part of the Rebel Sport Super 14 Selection Process, unless he
notifies the NZRU in writing by the Super Rugby Eligibility date (usually the second week of October) each year."

So by the sounds of it there probably is some sort of system around it.

I could get behind that - although ITM Cup should allow 1 foreigner per team - there's been some local heroes made in Adam Kleeburger, Francisco Bosch and Eric Fry.

Wait Richie should be a Highlander?!?! LOCK REGIONS

  17. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

I don't think it works that way any more. I know the NZRU contracts manager (I forget the job title exactly) - but I can find out exactly how this works in theory and reality soon enough.

  18. Athlai JJD Heads

2-3 non provincial players in your 22, allow internationals in that mix.

  19. Rego RS Hutchinson

    Reality eh?

Would actually be quite interested to know a lot of areas regarding player contracts. Not exactly something that's well publicised.
