He was doing it last season though, and in games RVP wasn't playing I don't think he can play as a striker anymore, wether thats a loss of confidence at striking in all areas where he used to score for fun, or some big headed idea that he can do some much he can go where ever he wants without getting critisised and hes just gotton used to it. Games where we've had RVP and Chicho playing have flowed so much more in attack for me, its like instead of trying to counter properly Rooney just wants to hold onto it, turn a couple of times and fire a massive cross field ball to someone Its irritating
He's still miles better than Hernandez. Hernandez is barely a footballer outside the box and Rooney's even better than him in it. If he leaves the default big-game front two will probably be Kagawa in behind RVP.
Wouldn't say hes miles better than Hernandez if you one of them to just be a striker Hernandez goal ever 90 minutes, can't really have a go at him for that
Yeah, he isn't miles better than Hernandez at all or better than him in the box. Hernandez's movement is absolutely top notch and relentless time and again. Rooney cbf'd doing that so constantly. Also, Hernandez's play outside the box is improving each season. See for example against West Brom where he was brilliant first half linking up and drifting around. Even provided the assist for the Kagawa goal with a great cross.
Hernandez's main attribute outside of the box is that he never gives up. So many times I see him pushed to the ground only to get straight back up, win the ball back and bomb on with it
It's weird to say he cbf, Rooney runs a LOT more than Hernandez. Hernandez is basically a poacher. He's at his best coming off the bench when we need a goal, finding half a yard in the box against a tired team dropping deep. He doesn't help us control the game at all. Rooney's frustrating and I'm clearly not his biggest fan but he takes up much deeper positions than Hernandez, plays more passes, puts in more tackles, takes great set pieces and still probably scores more goals. There's no comparison really. But Hernandez is getting better and Rooney is getting worse, so that's a good reason to stick with Hernandez. Neither are that great but Rooney's been going backwards since the end of 2009/10 and we'll get a lot of money for him.
Only reason Rooney got more goals this season is that he played twice as long as Chicho We don't need Rooneys extra sidewards and crossfield passes, we need him in the box and he doesn't do it. Set peices isn't an essential part of comparing players, especially when VP is better than them both, and 20 tackles to 7 tackles over a prem season is literally nothing to shout about Not saying that just because we're getting rid of Rooney suddenly chichos better, this was more just a counter point on Rooney being miles better than chicho, which I don't think he is
I am not sure Rooney these days runs much more than Hernandez tbh. He used too. And what i meant in terms of Cbf'd was that Hernandez has the discipline to make those runs constantly running channels and in behind defenders where 80/90% of the time you won't even be noticed or involved in play. Whereas Rooney needs to be involved constantly in the play and be the main man. He cbf'd making the unglamorous runs in that sense. Obv, Rooney is better than Hernandez right now in terms of all the skills he brings to the table. Not even disputing that, but it's not as huge as you were suggesting for me.
Hernandez doesn't run the channels, almost all of his runs are out-to-in. Think his goal against France in 2010, or his first against Villa this season from Scholes's pass. He doesn't really have the physical presence to do the channel-running job. I love him and I'd hate it if we sold him but he's a one-dimensional player and I think he's at his best coming off the bench. He's the new Solskjaer.
