Actually looking closer that includes wages so would be significantly less than that, £40-50 mill For that I think I'd rather keep him
We'd have to spend that much to replace him though no doubt, and if we lose Rooney we need to fill two positions because he covered CM depth as well
He barely played as a striker when we were using him as a striker tbh. We be able to buy someone who could be really good in a specific position rather than someone who can't seem to decide where he want k be on the field
Fairly sure that will have been the role he was given though. We never used him as an out and out Striker - that was RvP/Hernadez's role. He was used as an AM this season in a playmaker role behind the striker(s). Played alot on the left/right first half of season too
We have enough depth for the front 2 positions. Welbeck, Van Persie and Chicharito can play as the striker and Welbeck, Kagawa and Van Persie can play as the Support striker. If a top striker is available we can sign him or just replace Rooney with a wide forward like Bale/Lamela etc.. who can score goals from out wide cutting in or in the ronaldo role. As for CM, we need to sign a quality CM either way. Rooney is just a temporary fill in option there right now.
Dunno about that tbh. Sir Alex said he was used in CM to get his form back and get him more involved in play. Besides for his wage rate, will he be worth the hassle and money in CM ? Or even want to play there ?
The Wayne Rooney I watched every week used to beat people for fun. Ferguson has added longevity to his career, it's understandable on such an investment but he's changed him as a player. He's still great but I always thought he could have been one of the best. The Rooney that beat about 6 players as soon as he came on against Blackburn is long gone.
That's pretty much down to Rooney though. His fitness, motivation and lifestyle choices have never been great. Doubt Sir Alex told him to stop beating players or stop doing his pacy bursts. Someone like Ronaldo refined his game to become more effective as he went on after he lost his early exuberance. Rooney has gone the same way and been not near as effective. He is still a very very good player mind you, but thinks he is better than what he is still and expects to just rely on that natural talent alone to get him there amongst the super elite.
He should have been encouraged to keep that youthful enthusiasm that got him the move to United. He was fearless at Everton. It was brilliant to watch.
if i was moyes, i would build my team around rooney. Young enough to still have a serious impact for the next 4/5 years, experienced enough not to lose his temper anymore. Still shows more passion and work rate than most. He would deffo be one of the first names on my team sheet, if not the first.
